You haven't lived until you've been chased by a bison in the dark.

I had no plans on getting that close to the bison, but you honestly can't see them in the dark with only the moonlight.

yes, they are some big dudes...closest thing to what I would consider to be a "beast"....

I juat can't even imagine thousands and thousands of them roaming wild in the US...

I looked it up on wiki, and it says a male is six feet tall. I have to hand it to the indians who went after these with a bow and arrow. I would have told the chief, "Me no can hunt, today".

North America had approximately 60,000,000 bison/buffalo/tatanka before 1492.

By 1890, they had been hunted virtually to extinction, with only a few thousand left.

Levels are at about 500,000 these days, mostly on ranches and farms.

When you're hungry you would use bows and arrows.

I always think of Wyatt Earp and dances with wolves

I was once fishing the Firehole River in Yellowstone one afternoon and started to walk out to the road just before dark. While crossing through some aspen trees, I found myself surrounded by a small herd of bison, including one huge male about the size of the one in the picture. I felt really helpless, armed only with my flyrod and creel.

I saw one about twice that size at a park once. It dwarfed the rest of the ones there that were similar in size to the one in the pic. I was fricking shocked by the size of that mofo.
