I agree on a crossing in the St. Gabriel to Plaquemine area connecting to Hwy. 1. It would greatly ease transportation amongst all the process plants.

Someone here tried to argue that the "city" of Plaquemine is too "congested" to allow a bridge built nearby.

Pretty much sums up the whole fricked up mindset that prevents progress in this area in a nutshell.

Seems like we are really at the threshold. Something needs to be done to alleviate traffic across the river. Fingers crossed but the state will probably just build one between the 2 BR bridges instead of building one in Plaquemine to split the difference between BR and Donaldsonville.

This is why we can't have a loop.

Neither of those need to have sufficient clearance for ocean going tankers, either. Of course, BR's "new" bridge is the last bridge upriver that does. Thanks Huey.

how far would you like large vessels to be able to go upriver?

It would have to be south of Plaquemine. Most of the town is right along the river. So yes it would be too congested to put a bridge in the town of Plaquemine. I can assure you that a bridge is wanted here though.

The legend is that Huey built the 190 Bridge to keep oceangoing vessels from going further up the river, but at the bend just north of there there's a huge freakin' sandbar. Keeping a deep channel open would require 24/7 dredging or a massive engineering project to cut through the bend. And there's really no suitable place along the river that has both the topography and railroad/highway connections for big industrial infrastructure until, what, Memphis?

The bridge makes for good storytelling, but it's more likely they didn't build it high enough for oceangoing ships to pass under because they knew ships would never need to go any further up the river.

they also have a huge sandbar at the bend just south of the river that they have to dredge often. when the river is low, you can walk out past the tree line into where the river usually is.

Yea sounds about right. Would be way too expensive for companies to go past BR any further.

Moving from BR makes you realize exactly how shitty that interstate system is.
