Goodman is generally the "spec house" grade of unit...used by contractors because they are the cheapest. I have however, seen them last a hell of a long time. I can't say I would buy one, but the unit I just replaced in my house was a goodman and it lasted 21 years.

I used to be an Amana dealer until Goodman bought them. They make absolutely the worst equipment in the industry.

I’m now a Trane dealer.
You don't think the competition makes good equipment? SHOCKING, I TELL YOU!
I've never seen problems that I could absolutely pin on Goodman equipment, but it does seem to be a little more cheaply made than some of the prestige brands. Also, as others have said, Goodman ain't real picky about who gets to use their equipment and name, so you've got to be careful about the installation because a bad installation with less robust equipment can go pear shaped real quick.
Rock-solid construction can make up for many sins of a bad installer and a good installer can make up for many sins of cheaper construction. It kinda works both ways.

I will never own another Goodman.
Took the lowest price, once with a 5 ton Goodman compressor / outside unit.
Year One expires the parts and labor warranty. It failed in year two. Now all of a sudden, parts did not include the $2100 in Freon.
Pulled the whole system and went with a Ruud. No problems after 8 years.

I have a Goodman unit at my house. 5-6 years in, and I've replaced the capacitor once. Other than that, no problems out of it, other than regular preventative maintenance. That being said, my HVAC guy swears by Rheem.

Damn, most of them are 10 years for parts. I had a compressor go out in a 7 year old Carrier at our old house and the part was under warranty. Still cost me like $1200 in labor though

I worked in a supply house that sold Goodman back in college. In talking with the contractors and based upon what i saw, Goodman made a quality unit with a lifetime compressor warranty on their higher efficiency units. I would’ve happily put one in my house.

They all use virtually the same manufactured components-compressor-contactors,motors,fans etc. coils may be different however. If installed correctly, they all should be fine !!

I have a Goodman, 5-6 yrs old, professionally installed and serviced every year. No issues at all, live in south Louisiana.

My TRANE system is 20 years old. It’s a heat pump, so it runs year round. Replaced the evaporator coil in the attic 6 years ago. Thinking about replacing the whole system this fall/winter just to upgrade to a more efficient system. Will probably stick with TRANE.

Are they as bad as one rep tried to make them out to be?
Some of them are made in Fayettville Tn. You ever been to Fayettville Tn?

quote:Yes, that’s true. But Freon was not classified as a part.
Damn, most of them are 10 years for parts.
22 pounds of R-12 was the tipping point for putting a whole new 410-A system in.

Just replaced the evaporator coil on my son's 10 year old Goodman.
The tech I've used for years is independent.
He said Goodman was very low end and have had unresolved issues with the coils for years.
Pay a little more and get a better unit.

Bought four houses at different times that needed total HVAC replaced, bought Trane each time and was very pleased with the unit. One of the units is still running after 28 years, and has had no repairs. House I am in now has been running 13 years with no issues.

Bought a mid-range or so Lennox. Ran it over 20 years. The coil rusted a few years in, but when.I showed the local installer (in business locally about 50 years) the flyer they gave me that bragged about how it was coated to prevent corrosion, they replaced it for a couple hundred for labor. It was way beyond warranty, so they were decent about it.
It was still humming close to 25 years, but it had a hiccup one summer. I was able to get it going again myself, but took it as a sign. Bought another Lennox, and it’s been good for a few years now.
A lot of the reviews emphasize that the quality of the installation is VERY important, no matter the brand. Go with a legit installer.

I had a Goodman that lasted 12 years. Coil was leaking and to replace it was 1,300 plus risk of other things going out, but for 4600 I could get an entirely new 5 ton system by Amana. Went with the Amana.

Pretty sure good man is Daikan, check prices for American standard/trane if you expect to stay in house. Had a 16 see American standard installed a few months ago and happy with it. Goodman/Amana was cheaper though.
