There are people on this board who are going to chime in for him.
These are the same people who say EWE "wasn't that bad".

These people obviously lack clarity of thought.

This is an extremely shortsided and unsubstantiated opinion. I would argue the exact opposite honestly.

yeah southern predates the lakes by 50 or so years.

Frankly, it would look pretty bad if Southern was built right there.

Yeah, but it'd make a great addition to a chain e-mail to send to grandma!

Southern moved to The Bluffs in the early 1910's. One of the nicest and most picturesque patches of land in the Baton Rouge area. The lakes were dug out of swamps in the 1930's as public works project.

Of course. Like I said, he left behind a complicated legacy. You can't deny what he did for the state's infrastructure.

He was a man of his time. He figured out how to break the Planter/NOLA Old Regular oligarchy that had a stranglehold on the state. His methods may have been questionable, but change was needed, and he provided that change. When he took office there was less than 100 miles of paved highway in the state. Think about that for a minute.

I'm reminded of the scene in Life of Bryan, when a member of the PFJ (or PJF)ask "what have the Romans done for us?"

Huey Long paved roads, built schools in rural parts of the state, built bridges, got school books for poor kids, was the father of LSU, built hospitals that everyone could use, had rivers dredged etc etc.

Was he on the take? absolutely.

Just from an infrastructure point of view this state would look much different without HPL.

Hell no. But he was the father of LSU, so there's that.

It was his underlings who were on the take much moreso than he. Money wasn't his motivation as much as power. He kept the graft to a manageable level while he lived. After his death, guys like Leche and O.K. Allen got out of control.

Yea, I agree with the "Robin Hood" analogy of taking from the "working" man and giving it to the undeserved.

It was what was needed at the time. That said, it became unneeded when Huey's hunger for power got too far out of hand. We got some good things out of Huey, but he also had a very dark side and would have turned the presidency into a dictatorship if he had lived to run and be elected. If that would have happened, one would have hoped that congress would have had to balls to impeach him. You certainly would not have wanted him in the presidency going into WWII - it would have been a disaster.
