Nitrogen gas - most painless and peaceful
Guillotine - instant death
Proper hanging - proper hanging involved using the noose knot under the chin so that it snapped the neck backwards, breaking it and causing instant unconsciousness.
There are charts that they used to get the length of rope correct depending on the weight of the person. Too short and the neck wouldn't break and they'd die from asphyxiation after awhile.
Too long and the weight of their body would rip the tissue in their neck as well, effectively decapitating them.
