lol hey I'm all for putting kids in the best position to win but at that age they should focus on making sure kids are learning the game and having fun so that they want to continue playing.

That's why you buy them ice cream after.

But, remember....

Go to just about any ballpark, gym, field, or any other venue for kids sports in any town, in any state and in less than 10 minutes of observing I'm sure you'll see at least one coach who thinks like that. It's sad but true.

Bingo. When I talked last night to the parents of the softball team I'm coaching, I listed out my goals for this season.

1. Make it safe for the girls.
2. Make it fun for the girls.
3. Teach them the fundamentals of the game
4. Teach them other important lessons like teamwork, sportsmanship, and doing their best.
5. Give them a softball season that will make them want to continue playing as they grow.

If we achieve those goals, it will have been a perfect season IMO.

You'd be incorrect. It is in full swing around B'Ham. I know some competitive girls' softball leagues who never really stop. My son's baseball team has been going since January, but we are those evil travel ball people who torture our children through sport.

What's funny is that my 16 yo niece moved on from Facebook a long time ago because it's for "old people".

I agree, but the rec leagues around here are starting now too. As stated, they try to have the reg season wrapped up around the time school lets out so families who are serious can go on to all stars and others who aren't can still get a decent season in and have the summertime to do other stuff.

yall dont have kids still playing basketball and soccer? The rec leagues down here wait until those sports finishes before starting the other ones. Soccer and basketball wont end until the end of March, rec baseball wont start until sometimes in April.

Like I said, our travel baseball and soccer teams pretty much go year round...right now we are practicing soccer 3 days and play on weekends until the end of April, we overlap with baseball for just a few weeks because we'll start next week, but wont end until mid July

You're right. But it's not like you're thinking. This is not full fledged little league baseball where you practice 4 or 5 days a week and each practice is at least 2 hours (or more) long. At this age, they'll have a softball activity no more than 3 days week, counting both practices and games (when the season starts). Practices will be no more than an hour and game will be no more than 5 innings or 60 minutes. So while it may seem to you like these girl's are going to be getting worn down to a nub playing softball starting in mid-Feb, that's not the case.

My daughter is in basketball season right now. It's season will end right before the start of softball season. What we're doing right now in softball is just preseason practice.
