MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is dead after being shot by a Memphis Police officer.
The shooting happened late Friday night after the officer stopped a car in the 5700 block of Winchester.
The driver was given a citation for a headlight that was out and was released.
The passenger,19-year-old Darrius Stewart, however, had several outstanding warrants and was put in the back of the officer’s car, uncuffed, while the officer verified the suspect’s warrants.
After checking with communications, the officer confirmed that Stewart was wanted for a sex offense in Iowa and had another warrant for a failure to appear in court out of Illinois.
Police say when the officer opened the car door to handcuff Stewart, he kicked the door and attacked the officer.
Investigators say during the struggle, the Stewart got the officer’s handcuffs and started hitting him.
The officer shot Stewart.
The Darrius Stewart was taken to the Regional Medical Center where he later died.

The mother says the warrants were not his and that they were mistakenly placed on his record, and that he had been pulled over before and all of this was supposed to have been cleared up.
Today the identity of the officer was released

According to reports, 26-year-old Connor Schilling was the one who shot Stewart.
He was hired by the Memphis Police Department back in 2012 and has been relieved of duty pending the outcome of this investigation.
WREG has learned Schilling was suspended back in July6 2014 for a DUI arrest in Southaven.
The criminal charges were dismissed but he was suspended without pay for 18 days because of it.
The shooting happened late Friday night after Schilling stopped a car in the 5700 block of Winchester.

They could invite Jesse Jackson back and I'll even pay for his room at the Lorraine Motel.

No way this board is believing that.

I'll take "looting, burning and mayhem" for $500 Alex.

My momma taught me to not fight with cops. It doesn't matter if I'm right or wrong, I never fight with a cop.

I can't recall an episode of COPS where something similar to this was not said

I have been watching it closely, mainly because I used to live there and my wife still works there. A year ago I was in a violence meeting and they were discussing how most of the gangs had banded together to fight the cops instead of each other. With the release of the officer today I am wondering whether anybody will even care enough to do something stupid.

got the officer’s handcuffs and started hitting him.
Sucks that he died, but he had no good reason to attack the officer. They left him uncuffed, so they were trying to go easy on him.

Last time I was on Beale I was approached by roughly 30 homeless crackheads. I can't imagine them being anything but rational and understanding about the whole incident.

It reminds me of a suicide in Mississippi. A black man was found hanging in a tree. His death was ruled a suicide. He had served time for murdering a white elderly woman for $100. This was a few months ago.
To this day, they are marching in protest saying he was murdered by white people and that the investigation wasn't transparent because of racist officials. However, the lead investigator from MBI is black.
My point is people will convince themselves of whatever they need to in order to cope with what they perceive as injustice.
