I'm too cheap to pay a landscaper, so im doing this myself....
I have an area thats 35ft long, and 6 1/2 wide.
The bags of mulch are 2 CU FT.
About how many bags should I purchase to cover the area?

How deep do you want the mulch? I would guess 20 bags

Serious reply: answer can't really be given without knowing the exact type.
But general rule of thumb is 3 inches.
So 35 ft x 6.5 ft x 0.25 ft = 56.88 cubic feet.
Divide that by 2, rounding up for loss and possibly over placing, you end up with 30 bags.
You see? Seventh grade math was there for a reason.

56 cubic feet....or about 2 yards at a landscape lot.
The 2 yards is a lot cheaper

I have a similar size area on each side of my driveway. A minimum of 12 depending on how many plants you have. We have a bunch of iris' so don't need as much mulch

Average recommended height is about 3 inches
You also want to add in settling which means you should add about 20% to your final amount.
For a 35'Lx6.5'Wx3"H you are looking at 2.11 Cubic yards. Adding in the 20% to account for settling, that means you need about 2.5 Cubic Yards of Mulch.
2.5 Cubic Yards is around 68 Cubic Feet so you will need 32 Bags of mulch.
Protip: PLace the bags in a wheel barrow and just wheel them out to your area that you want to cover and place bags one after the other. Cut it open and spread dump in that spot. Then use the back of a hard tine rake to spread or go by a nice landscape rake to spread evenly.

I just ordered 4 yards for $180 bucks in the NOLA area. Not sure how much a bag costs, but that's 128 cubic feet, so looking at $1.41/cubic foot.

Don't by mulch at all. Use pine needles instead . Whatever you do, don't buy cypress mulch
