How much homeless/thuggery can FQ tourists handle?

Down here for business for a few days, and the quarter looks more depressing than I've ever seen it. Instead of a few homeless people scattered throughout, they're lining the streets. There are at least 3 "I bet I can tell you where you got your shoes" gangs doing business between Canal and St. Louis - and I didn't make it farther than that. NOLA is a pretty hot tourist destination right now, but how much of this can NOLA handle and still hold onto its "old-world/quirky" charm before tourism takes a hit?

Good question. Doesn't seem to affect tourism. NOLA has mastered the art of deception.

I stay on LSUHSC campus. Homeless people all over the fricking place by campus.

Honestly, what gets me are the number of street urchins with dogs.
I genuinely just feel so bad for the dogs.

I think we're pretty close to a tipping point, tbh.

If you mean the gutterpunks, most of them are not poor or homeless

Wow, so you are from Baton Rouge and went to the Quarter, I'm shocked. Did you get a Hand Grenade? those are good.

You could quasimodos. I don't care. The bottom line is the poor dogs laying next to them are the only ones I see when I'm walking by.
I have actually handed out small bags of dog food to them in the past.

Yeah, there was one guy with three dogs laying there, ignoring everybody and laying there just being sad.... I don't know what sort of torture I'd have to put my dog through to just lay there for hours on end without acknowledging people at all.

Easy solution... Stop impersonating a loser and go to Frenchmen.

Heroin. The answer is heroin.

I'm not arguing that Frenchmen is less touristy than the quarter, but you're missing the point.
Tourists go to the French Quarter. It's what's New Orleans is known for. It's the bread and butter of its tourism industry that it's so proud of.
And if everyone stopped being a "loser" and went to Frenchmen, where do you think the problem would go to?

I just came home for a few days and saw maybe 1 person similar to what you describe. I'll say that the exits near that shelter on St Charles were worse than I remember but me thinks you have an axe to grind.
Things are good in NOLA despite it's problems. Try not so much for the BR butt hurt...

To be fair I'm from Chicago and live in BR. I've been here a while and Illinois has sucked long enough at football that I actually started following LSU and TD a little bit :-)

How has this thread already become a BR v. NO thread? BR has more than its fair share of cons over NO, but the homeless problem is not one of them.

TBH, I don't know why people hate on hipsters so much and ignore the gutterpunks. Sidney Torres should run trucks through their twice a day and spray them down with water cannons.

Oh no, they have a narrative in their head of what NO is and just want to reaffirm that before they head home to Mecca (Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Zwolle).
But its just piss and bums but somehow the house across the street from me just sold for $275 a square foot.

Because the BR Napoleon Syndrome has been a thing for decades. If you spend a few days in NOLA right now and this is what you come away with, then having BR as part of your TD CV is a clue to say you have a bias. Not really that difficult...
