So based on your numbers: Fees/ parking pass 1,200 Dorm 3,600 Meal plan 1,200 Let's say books are 500 ( which may be low). You are looking at 6,500 a semester. Times that by 8= 52,000 Wow. Over 50k to go to a PUBLIC school WITH TOPS! This post was edited on 1/23 at 3:10 pm
Why are you including living expenses like food and housing? Adults go to college it cost money to live on your own weather you are going to college or not. $2400 a year tuition with tops, which I think is very reasonable for higher education. Books should not be more than $250 a semester. There are plenty of options to get cheaper books like the edition previous Or renting through Amazon.

I came out of dental school with around $20K in debt in the late '80s/early '90s, though my dad paid the first year (which was the most expensive at around $10K since it included the purchase of all your equipment). I always got a good laugh when I'd read how dentists come out of school $150K in debt or ridiculous numbers like that.
Well, aren't you an a-hole

It was $600/mo for an apartment and probably $200/mo for food.
Tuition and books were paid for by TOPS.
So $9,600 per year or so.
I always had leftover money from the extra TOPs bonus after books were paid for so id usually throw $100 or so of Paw Points on the fee bill so tops would cover it.

I looked at going to Auburn for a specialized degree, and they want $42k/yr for out of state students. That is just tuition....nothing else.
man, that is just crazy...believable, though. I know someone from LA who attends Mississippi State...her out of state tuition is $21K per semester...

Too much
If I was a freshman or sophomore I'd transfer
But I'm a 5th year senior and I'm balls deep. fricking 8,000 dollars living 45 minutes from the Louisiana border

You are correct. Parents never pay for the living expenses of children in college. As for books, I have been out of college for 10 years. I do not know they they run these days. It was just a guess. 250 va 500 per semester is only a 2k difference over 8 semesters

If i could do it over I would live at home and do the CM bridge program at BRCC. Of course I switched to CM from bio halfway through my junior year. Hence why I'll be graduating at 24

I don't mean that I laughed at people who were in debt, dumbass. I laughed at what I considered unrealistic estimates by the media. Tuition at LSUSD was around $3,500/yr. tack on $5-6K the first year for all your drills and tools (a couple years later students started leasing instead of buying all of this), and the next 3 years there were minimal extra expenses outside of books. And most dental schools are state run, so I'd assume similar costs. Anyone who left dental school $100K in debt back then (and there were some) had to try really hard to be in debt.

Not true. In the 35k I said earlier covers his books, living expenses, and tuition.
His books this semester is $640. Yes you can get used in some cases but not the online codes for the workbooks.

Tuition and fees: $4500
Books: $150 per class - average of $750
Food: highly variable, id say $200 per month for 6 months - $1200
Rent: I got a good deal and paid $500/month, 6 months - $3000
Car insurance, gasoline - at least $1200
$4500 + $750 + $1200 + $3000 + $1200 = $10,650 per semester minimum
Highest level of TOPS will cover tuition and fees ($4500) = $6,150
Other costs may include: health insurance, cell phone, water, electricity, cable, Internet, etc: I'll round it off to $2000 per semester = $8,150 total with highest level TOPS

Well I just paid my last fee bill and I'm in my last semester at LSU right now. It cost me about 500-800 a semester tuition (with TOPS top tier) and another 300-800 a semester for books/access codes. 200 yearly for parking pass and motorcycle parking. Summer tuition (took summer classes every summer) was about 2k. I always worked 2 jobs and have exactly $0 in debt currently, no student loans, paid my truck and motorcycle off, no credit card debt. It's 100% doable with the right drive.

LSU is very cheap for instate students compared to similar places around the country

Gov. Bobby Jindal took office eight years ago, state taxpayers provided 60 percent of the funding for Louisiana’s public universities.
Now, taxpayers put up barely a quarter of the tab, leaving students and their families to cover most of the gap in the form of rising tuition and fees.

With TOPS I think my tuition was less than $500 a semester. Didn't buy books besides the ones I need to get online codes.
Only thing that really cost money was living expenses (rent and food).
Back in the day that was laughable. Now though, you are pretty fortunate if you come out of dental school with only 150k. If you cant make an instate school and have to go to the privates coming out with 300k+ debt is all but guaranteed.

I'm always reading these ridiculous numbers for college costs. Assuming you're not a dumbass and get help from TOPS, what does a semester cost when you factor in on or off-campus housing, books, fees, food and living expenses, etc. - all in, what's it really cost?

Graduated in 2008. Back then the highest tops covered all fees plus some left over for books. I still took out the minimum loans so I didn't have to work full time and could set some aside to have a little savings when I graduated. Loans ended up being about 18k. I paid them off in about five interest accumulating years, so with I probably had under $23k come out of pocket over the course of 11 years.
I lived off campus all but one semester. Paid for everything, including rent, however rent went to my mom who bought a house for me and my sister and charged us and our roommates enough to cover the mortgage and utilities. She sold it right after we graduated for a ridiculous profit, so all in, we all came out pretty good.
It sounds like TOPS isn't keeping up with the cost of tuition and fees, which sucks.

About $1600 a semester not including books, room & board.
Can be a little less with higher TOPS levels.
