Could go asphalt to save some money, obviously concrete is better. Did some asphalt about 10 years ago per spec from architect and passed by the project the other day and courts were still in good shape

I wouldn't think clay is practical for residential applications - unless you have no real const concerns and perhaps a maintenance staff at your home, which you might, though I suspect if you did you wouldn't be asking the OT how much it costs.
Where clay (Har-Tru) is going to get you is subsurface irrigation and upkeep - you have to add a pretty good bit of the stuff periodically to maintain the surface. That being said, I love the stuff, especially when it has the proper base depth and subsurface irrig. Suits my game better too.
