The correct answer is that either one is acceptable now.

But the right answer is two.

Two spaces

Except on iPhone, where I similarly double tap the space bar, which results in period and 1 space.

Actually, 1 is "correct," as pointed out in the article. That being said, I use two out of habit.

Correct may not have been the best term. They are both acceptable.

I go by Strunk and White which says both are acceptable. As mentiined earlier, just be consistent. I'll only use two with a non variable typefont like courier. But I typically use calibri or palatino linotype.

Which is why I put it in quotes. From a prescriptive point of view, 1 is indeed "correct." However, from a descriptive point of view either is acceptable.

I'm pretty strictly Times New Roman, but, again, that's out of habit.

This dude seems hell-bent on saying two spaces is wrong, yet his own reference to MLA states it's perfectly acceptable.

quote:

As a practical matter, however, there is nothing wrong with using two spaces after concluding punctuation marks unless an instructor or editor requests that you do otherwise.

I do understand it's no longer required, but there is no error in it. Either way is acceptable. If it were NOT acceptable, would Microsoft Word (or similar word processing software) not make that part of the autocorrect?

Because he's a pedant. They can be entertaining at times, but they do get tiresome.

It isn't pretentious when you're correct.

As he pointed out, two spaces made sense back when fonts were all monospace but it's 2014 now. Get with the program or get left behind.
