How many plays are too many plays for a grade school football team?

...and a large portion of the plays are derivatives of a set of base plays?

Don't know.
You know how many games per week are too many for a travel ball team?
It's a trick question. There can never be too many games.

A woodchuck could chuck 5 woods.

Does a coach get to huddle with them on offense in your league? That makes a huge difference in what you're able to do. If you're depending on a kid QB to get everyone on the same page and remind them what they're supposed to do vs. an adult coach.

Second derivative will give you the answer

Rantard answer: "Apparently our coach thinks 4 are too many for a college team."
Seriously though, the number of plays probably shouldn't be more than about 12 or 15 maybe 20. Multiple formations can help with making it seem like more but still keep it simple enough for everyone to know their job.
I'm assuming like 4th grade, obviously as they get older it can be more elaborate.
ETA: 288

I ended up with 42: The answer to life, the universe and everything.
It's about 14 plays run out of 3 formations.
Team stacked, league fricked.

As long as it's a simple concept and not weird words and signs used to make up the call you'll be okay.
Example:
Formation
Back
Hole
Protection
Count
I-Right 34 Wham on 2
Using that, your playbook is only limited to what you can come up with out of that. If they understand the basics of each grouping, then they should be fine.

6 plays, split veer. It's like novocaine. Just give it time, it always works.

What was the question?

I think we only had 22 and 23 iso, 28 and 29 sweep, and a tight end dump pass, but we ran them out of 3 formations. Technically, that's 15 plays.

Age /3 number of formations. Age x2 number of plays.
EX. 12yo 4 formations 24 plays

Tecmo Bowl had like 6 and that was enough. Esp if you got Barry sanders on your team.

Twice as many as are in Miles' playbook would probably not be too much.

Super Tecmo Bo Jackson >>> Barry Sanders

You're right. Bo knew Tecmo.
