What was your first dental checkup like after your 11 year gap? Did you have a lot of decay?

Not much decay surprisingly but I had a pretty severe case of periodontal disease. Took a bunch of trips to a periodontist and way more money than I wanted to spend to clear that up.

But I “only” had three cavities. One of which was the filling that fell out that needs a root canal and crown now.

ETA: and it was really more than an 11 year gap. I’m just now seriously taking care of it now at 34 years old. I went once when I was 27 because of a toothache. So it’s more like an 18 year gap. I do not recommend. Be smarter than me.

Root canal followed by crown is more common 50+ years for teeth that have decayed under an initial crown. Twenty years later such a tooth might break and need to be pulled.

Ask your dentist if extraction and implant replacement now might be cost effective.

Before this year I never had a crown now I have 2.
dude, you better go ask another dentist to look at it. Had a filling pop out years ago and some dentist in Auburn told me i needed a root canal and crown.

Went to my buddy who is a dentists and he used a medicated filling and corrected it with minimal expense. No root canal, no crown. Saved me thousands.

Food for thought

Nah, mine clearly needed a root canal.

Here is a pic of the massive cavity and inflamed root. I was in pain too, which is usually a tell tale sign.

Easily a root canal, buildup, then crown, and it’ll give you 10+ years if you take care of it.

Save your natural teeth if possible.

You can get free dental work in prison.
But only in Louisiana might it have been from a Heisman Trophy winner.

I've got 2 because I used to grind my teeth at night and broke off two of my molars.

This is what got me. Grinding my teeth at night, especially when stressed. Ended up breaking a tooth in my 20s and needed a root canal & crown. No other issues.

Plenty of fillings. Some say dental work is a scam

It’s only a scam if you don’t mind wearing dentures. I’m a dentist and you people are lazy as frick when it comes to your teeth. And then you have the nerve to roll in and blame it on Mommy and Daddy. I’m not hearing it anymore. Floss your damn teeth!

Fillings as a kid finally failed as well as all front four were ground down due to a faulty bite.

Smile looks pretty though.

Has anyone done this? Have a friend looking into going, there are even dental based travel agencies that set up trips to countries with Western trained dentists that do procedures for a fraction of the cost. And most insurance companies don’t pay much for dental and are quick to try to call procedures cosmetic so they don’t have to pay anything.

I had great dental care growing up thanks to my parents, and didn’t have my first (and only) cavity until I was in my 50’s, between two teeth (not diligent about flossing). I do have two implants and crowns on my back two molars because I can’t stop chewing ice and eating cracklings and cracked the two of them. It was not cheap, I have what’s considered very good insurance, it paid less than half.

You’re a better man than me lol

I’m lucky to go 2 straight checkups without a cavity

It’s frustrating too because I tell myself after every checkup/cleaning that I’m going to finally stop the Dr Pepper/coke and I always fail

My Brother-in-law is a dentist. He says 90% of it is genetic as long as you brush and floss regularly.

ETA: Alabama fan, no fillings or crowns and all my teeth.
