I was able to take my grandpa about 10 years ago before he passed away. He was a WWII veteran. I didn't realize how special of a time that was until he was gone.

Well Stephen Ambrose founded it for one reason NO but I'm sure the Higgens Boat had something to do with it as well.

Yeah, it started originally as the D-Day Museum and was located in NO due to it being the location of the Higgins manufacturing. After a few years they expanded it and rebranded it the WWII Museum.

Don't see the submarine movie Final Mission. It's not great. See Beyond all Boundaries.

.

are you going to attend a NolaOTgtg?

I'll have 31 start drawing up the plans like he did for Nurse's big visit. Have Lester Earl step his game up at his box so he is in tip top shape. Pox bake Kulunda's favorite pie. And make sure Uncle GlassMan plans a big party at Finn's so all the B class OTers are busy finger banging each other

Just gotta give me a date Bro ........ And a credit card number for the tab

The Higgins boat is definitely why they did it.

If you look at the main lobby where he Higgins boat replica is located the plaque even says so.

the museum was originally the D-Day museum... focused on the Normandy invasion

the biggest part of that was the Higgins Boats... which were built in NOLA... that's why the museum is in NOLA

it later developed to encompass the whole war and turned into the WWII museum

it's an awesome place... can never go enough

While the Higgins connection is important, this somewhat diminishes the efforts of Stephen Ambrose - his professorship, status as Eisenhower's official biographer, founding the Eisenhower Center at UNO, plus his personal efforts in securing the museum for New Orleans cannot be overemphasized.

New Orleans was home to the Higgins Industries, manufacturer of the Higgins Boat. Higgins himself was dubbed as “the man who won the war for us,” by President Dwight Eisenhower.

Havent been in awhile but went the first coupe of years that it opened and it was excellent . Well done and couldn't help but get teary eyed. One of my real good friends up here in Montana goes around and interviews those heroes that are still alive who served in WWII. I hope to bring him to New Orleans one day to see the museum.

Correct. He was the founder. I remember my father, who was a WWII vet writing him a check in the early 2000's. He also wrote many to the WWII Memorial in DC which Bob Dole spearheaded.

And fwiw the WWII Memorial in DC is the only one that was funded 100% by private donations. Those soldiers paid for their own Memorial.

I've seen them both with him before he died a couple years ago and both were one of the very few times I saw him cry.

I knew Ambrose a bit, he had a Summer house on the MS Coast. He grew up with hero worship for WWII vets and then after being so close to Eisenhower he was all-in to that portion of history. He would interrogate me at length over my here-say I'd gotten from my late pop about his Pacific Theater experience. Once he (Ambrose) knew he was dying and didn't have time for another exhaustive book he remarked to me that he was pissed he'd never specifically honed in on the story of the 11th Airborne in WWII. He said it would make for a great book. Whether he was just being nice to me because of my dad's service in it or not, he was a nice smart fellow who got shite done.

It is fantastic. The people there really did it right.

Take a full day and you still won't see all of the exhibits.

My father was in the 503rd Parachute Battalion. He fought all over the South Pacific in the Phillipines ! new Guinea, Leyte and ended up jumping in Coregidor to reclaim it in early 1945 or late 1944. Not sure. Came home with several bullet holes, but he came home.

WW2 museum is pretty awesome, loved the D-Day bunker panaroma and they had a bunch of German artifacts which was cool.

Also for all you history buffs, there is a small but very impressive Confederate war museum right across the street that's very inexpensive. Lot of really cool stuff.
