In relative terms compared to the rest of the state and 95% of Miss, Hammond is not bad.
You wouldn't know anything about this, but their restaurant scene is pretty good for a town that size. There is a theater for performances and a few good non trash bars that people like the typical OT like.
Living in the old established neighborhood around campus would be nice.
Again, it's not on the level with Nola, Mandeville, or BR, but I think I would rather move to Hammond than a place like Lake Charles or Alexandria.

lived in Hammond 15 yrs
best thing about it, unlike most other places I could live, is that I can completely avoid any and all trash and still enjoy what it has to offer
Hammond is at least 50% trash, maybe more, but if you just go eat and drink/shop downtown and don't go to Walmart you'd never know it. plus I can be in Covington in 20 or New Orleans in 45. I bet it takes longer to drive from mandeville to Covington than it takes me to drive to Covington, and I get to live in a place with zero traffic around me out in the woods
