This is the best way to learn. You have to live around people who speak it.

Who wants to live around Mexicans?

Kevin, when someone talks to you in English do you translate it in your head to Spanish?

Lol, no. When people tell me things in Spanish I translate it to English.

hispanic/latino is not a race, it's an ethnicity. Most hispanics are white hispanics (91%).

I'm gonna give this a go as well.

Going to Spain (humble brag) this December so having some understanding would prove useful.

What part because they speak Catalan and Basque in some parts, I speak Spanish and I couldn't understand them when I went to Spain.

Well shite.

Barcelona, so Spanish is going to be useless then? I'm aware of its region but not sure I want to learn that dialect for a week trip.

You'll be fine in Barcelona. You'll get the gist of everything and they'll understand you. It's just a dialect. I didn't have any trouble and I'm not fluent.

Don't laugh, Kevin. My French teacher in high school dreamed and thought in French and English. He learned English later in life too.

Catalan is similar to Spanish, more like a dialect.

In Mexico and points south, most Mexicans have difficulty understanding Catalan.

As for Basque, forget about it.
