How good of a workout is yoga? Specifically for the core?

My wife is looking to tighten her stomach back up to pre-baby days. She is wanting to do yoga for some reason. She hates standard gyms.

I've never done yoga so I have no idea if it is a legit workout for what she wants to accomplish.

Yoga is outstanding, but honestly I use it on an off day way to stretch. The P90X3 Isometrix video, if you can obtain it, is a great way to work on the core. So are the MMX, CVX and Accelerator workouts. He does a lot of moves that involve the core.

That's just in P90X3 terms, though. But if you can get your hands on those, she will enjoy the hell out of them.

I only did yoga as part of the p90X original circuit, and i never really thought it was much of a workout.

that being said, my fiance does yoga semi regularly and the instructors of her classes (both male and female) are in incredible shape.

P90X is the answer.

Yoga is pretty rough. My wife took it for a while and got a lot out of it. Her instructor was a totally ripped Vietnamese lady in her late '50's/early '60's who had a body that most twenty-somethings would kill for.

I find this exceptionally hard to believe.

The yoga routine in the original is way harder than the one in X3.

Your assertion that it "isn't much of a workout".

It depends on the style. Like someone else said, I generally do yoga for stretching. I'd bet that most of the time, you'll get a better core workout from any workout video or class that is focused on abs specifically.

it probably has to do with the fact that i was not coordinated to do a lot of the poses in the second half of it.

I've done a little yoga. It's all dependent on the poses she wants to do, and how flexible she is to begin with. I know I'm not very flexible around the hamstrings, so that would alter a lot of the positions I was attempting to do, and I could have hurt myself.

I have bad flexibility in my hammies too. I couldn't do any of the Warrior 3 or standing splits, but I kept at it and now I can nail them easily.

Google "yoga butt." Then you tell me.

Yoga can be as hard or as easy as you want to make it.

Not sure how much of a workout it is. Pretty much the only people I know that do it are some high level jits guys that do it for the stretching/flexibility aspect. They aren't ghey either.

Get the original P90x DVDs and rotate workouts.
Core
YogaX
Cardio

Then Ab RipperX individually for a few weeks. Later add it after Core & Cardio.

However, just following the program would do plenty.

ETA: Yoga ranges from easy to extremely challenging to brutal. So it depends. The P90X is a difficult to master workout so you can spend years improving your technique, with just that one DVD.

So it can easily stay challenging and worthwhile.
