How epic do you think Mansa Musa's pilgrimage really was?

If you don't know Mansa Musa was a West African Muslim King (over a territory near present day Ghana) in the 1320's & 1330's.
It's said when he made his pilgrimage from West Africa to Mecca he crushed the economy of several nations along the way because he spent so much gold that it became devalued.

if you believe primary sources and ancient historians the dude was basically King Midas. It's said he had 80,000 men and 12,000 slaves all carrying 4lbs of gold bars, as well as 100+ camels carrying 100-300 lbs of gold dust a piece which he sprinkled on the poor during his journey. Also all of their spears and armor were gold, or at least partially gold, and he fed his whole entourage out of his own pocket, they weren't looting or pillaging there way to Mecca.

Is this story true? Total BS? Or exaggerated throughout the years

Ahhhhh, the old Mansa Musa fairytale.

Dude never existed.

Most likely either woven out of whole cloth or exaggerated to an absurd degree. You have to realize these people were storytellers.

Much like Prester John.

How epic was Rapunzel's hair?

Dude wasn't real. Mansa, gold, Mecca, it's all fiction.

Oh absolutely, I feel like someone like him existed, there are too many sources for me to believe he was completely invented.
But I agree his wealth and ridiculous spending habits have to be very exaggerated

most definitely true

everyone knows that gold is the hardest and toughest of metals

also, everyone knows that the more pure the gold, the stronger it becomes

24 carat gold is basically metallic diamond and unobtanium combined

no doubt about these things

All believing the same fabricated legend. Look up Prester John. Same sort of thing.

Just think about it...close to 400,000 lbs of gold.

Out of Ghana.

With no modern mining or smelting equipment.

In the 1300s literally no one gave a sit about anyone in a lower social class than themselves. And no one ever have a shite about starving poor people in the streets.

If a king went to a few towns and tossed a few coins to the poor it's easy to see how his legend would be exaggerated over the years.

The guy probably existed, but he didn't have thousands of pounds of gold traveling with his golden armored army. Also, army weapons made of gold would be the least efficient weapons ever..

I believe the story is that they were plated in gold, not solid gold.

A fable based on what was likely a kernel of truth, like every other religious fable. That they don't claim he was born of a virgin or raised the dead shows a lack of imagination.

It's not really a religious tale though

Money Magazine rated him the ROAT (richest of all time) in July 2015.

The Money link won't open for some reason but this will CNBC

I actually remember reading that and thinking it was a little silly. But if he did exist and the story is true I guess he has to be the ROAT

Might as well match him up against Smaug with how fictional they are
