I have a good friend that quit drinking about a year ago.

We were at the deer camp one weekend and I offered him a beer and he told me he quit drinking. I asked why, and he said it had started affecting his life too much.

We left it at that, and I respect him a lot for manning up and being honest.

Unless you feel they'll be trying to get you to drink when you're around them, you shouldn't worry about how they feel about it. It's a decision you are making for yourself, not them.

When i told friends that knew me a long time that i quit drinking, the usual response was something along the lines of "good, that is probably for the better"

Reaffirms how out of control i was

You could always say you are taking a break from alcohol and never come off of it.

this is a great idea. say you're trying to cut back a bit and so you're taking this weekend off. then next weekend tell them you're taking a little break and just don't feel like drinking. then never come off it. that way you don't look too judgmental and if you ever decide to get off the wagon you won't look like too much of an arse for going back on your word. you also don't look like you're trying to make some big attention getting statement like 'i will never drink again. ever.'

That's why I changed it to "I'm trying not to drink right now"

I don't think Louisiana people would judge you too harshly if you quit drinking. I've found Louisiana to be pretty accepting of people who like to have a good time even without a drink. Having lived up n down the East Coast, I'd be more about it there than here.

Full disclosure: I'm writing this with a glass of 7up n Makers in my hand

If you were a heavy drinker, no offense, but you've just got to fess up. Just say that I'm done drinking, I've done some dumb shite when drunk, and booze just isn't for me. I have friends who smoke weed, and I quit. It's not awkward at all when I'm around them smoking, I just don't partake in it and say "no thanks".

Just say you decided to quit drinking. It's up to you whether you want to say why.

I don't drink because I'm just not into it.

I quit drinking so I wont be going to bars with you or sitting around drinking alcohol during games. I will bring my own non-alcoholic drink when I come over.
If you come to my house, I will provide non-alcoholic drinks.

Cover the bases, whatever is true.

You would be surprised how many fans dont drink, even tailgating. Thousands.

Of course, 10000 people is less than 10%, and i am including kids in this

If you are trying to quit for real, don't go making declarations like "I have quit drinking." Just say "no thanks." I have found that the only people that give a shite whether you drink or not are alcoholics. Normal people don't care whether you drink or even notice.

yep, I was in the same boat brother

when asked by others if I would like a drink, I respectfully decline and say ..." thanks for the offer but I no longer drink, been sober for 27 yrs "

I don't regret my past nor do I miss it. Being sober has allowed me to share my story with others and save lives
