I know, lots of room to flame me here, just looking for an honest answer from those who may have had a friend or family member become addicted...so three scenarios (and yes if you want to flame and say Im the one, fine).

1) Takes 4 5x500 oxy pills everyday all be dr's prescription for years

2) Dr "shops" some days takes 40mg-50mg of oxy some days none....but done this for years

3) Buys and sells to fund habit, but has taken same amount for years (40-6o mg day) and a few xanex a day

in all 3 cases the person works a decent job and acts "ok" with family friends etc.
Thanks for those who have some real insight here

All 3 are addicts

But I dont consider addiction a real problem until it negatively affects your life

I have a drink every single day before I go to bed. I crave that drink. I get ornery if I dont get it. Im probably technically an alcoholic. But it has no negative effect.

if you have to ask the question, you already know the answer.

You're still a slave to that addiction. If it makes you ornery when you don't get it, is that not negative?

Only problem with that is who decides when it is a "real" problem.

I have some real insight. The question is what role do they play in your life and why do you care?

If they work for you and their use endangers anyone, you should talk to them. If they are family members, mind your business. You can't change anyone that doesn't want to change.

They aren't taking the same amount for years. It doeasn't work that way.

I agree with you BUT the person in OP is conducting illegal activities that will have a negative impact if they get caught. A daily drink isn't illegal or wrong but getting a DWI (for instance) would be.

Hide their stash.

If, after enough time passes, you are offered a blow job to return the stash, you will have your answer.

You don't have to have had a friend or family member as an addict to recognize all three scenarios you presented are bad.

Addicts have to want to get help, they already know they're addicts.

Unless there is dementia or some other mitigating cognitive condition, otherwise normal folks know they are dependent.

They might not want to admit it to anyone else or even themselves but they know.

I don't know, but the couple of times (post-surgery, kidney stone) that I have been prescribed powerful pain pills, I can see why people get addicted to them.

I've known two people pretty well who had addictions to prescriptions. Both let it negatively affect them to the point that they couldn't get out of bed to go to work.
Doctor shopping is a big red flag, but if it isn't affecting work or home life, then they seem to be managing ok.

Consider the circumstances too. My FIL took way more than that but was a really big guy with terrible arthritis and had been in some pretty bad accidents when he was younger, like being ran over by a tractor. He was addicted as hell but there is no way anyone in his condition could function without some kind of pain relief.
