How do you break it to your kids when you have to go away for work?

Out of town for an unspecified amount of time. Not close enough to be able to come back on breaks.

How do you deal with it? Just FaceTime/Skype with them with possible? Send them stuff in the mail? Come home with a big bag of goodies like Santa?

My father would just say, "I have to travel for work, take care of your mother and the house for me." Thats about it. Script never changed as I aged.

I don't know but your wife tells me she loves it when you go out of town.

When I am in China I FaceTime l. of course my kid is less than a year old so it's not like she knows. I on the other hand am homesick for the weeks I am gone.

Man, parents are way more sensitive to their kids feelings these days. Mine parents would have been like "your dad has to go away for awhile to work, the company isn't sure when he will be finished. You will be able to talk to him on the phone from time to time." and I probably wouldn't think twice about it.

I took my boy to some random closed casket wake. Told him mommy was in there.

He cried, but the look on his face four days later when she walked though the door was priceless.

No easy way to do it. For a long while, I was in a pretty shitty situation that was very similar to what you're describing. Just a lot of tears at the airport. Also I found that Skype and face time made it worse, not better. But everybody's different.

Where's the offshore 7/7, 14/14, etc. oilfield baws at? They probably have some good advice.
