Pretty easy if you work night shift.

I read a study somewhere where they interviewed a thousand night shift nurses. Almost every one of them admitted to falling asleep while driving at least once in the past year.

There was actually a story of a nurse that died in a car accident driving home from a night shift. She fell asleep and crashed her vehicle. The family I think wanted to sue the hospital because the hospital would not allow employees to nap in their car if they needed to before driving home or to use their lunch break for a quick nap. Study after study has shown that allowing night shift workers the option of a quick nap(on their break time) actually increases productivity and decreases the risk of that person falling asleep when they drive home.

My hospital forbids us to nap at all. Even if you use your lunch break to take a 10 minute nap...you can be immediately fired and escorted off the property if you are caught napping. Don't think they will actually do that....they already have to a couple of employees.

I have fallen asleep many times while at a stoplight coming home from work. I usually blare my music really loud driving home with windows down now to keep me awake

stayed on beach drunk all night in Destin and me and my cousin woke up in the morning to drive back to Baton Rouge. Somewhere around Pensacola i nodded off. Woke up in the grass median of the interstate headed right towards concrete overpass pilings.

Decided to take a nap under said pilings.

I've learned a trick. When i start scratching the back of my head that's when i know i better find some place to pull over quick and sleep. I do it subconsciously every time.

I've fallen asleep while driving before but thank goodness for b those bumps on the side of the interstate or I could have died. I was able to wake up and make it home unharmed that night

This reminds me of what I used to do from time to time to frick with people. I'm in the far right lane and I close my left eye and tilt my head back with my mouth open. I could still see to drive fine, but to someone passing on the left, it looked like I was asleep. People would honk like crazy trying to wake me up.

Good times.

Back in early December, I drove 14 hours to Boca Raton, Florida. Unfortunately, I had to leave the next night because I didn't want to pay 150+ for a hotel room. So, on about 5 hours of sleep, I made the return drive and let me tell you just how brutal that drive is. Nothing but trees and road. I was about 3 hours away from LA when I had to pull over and try to nap because I was losing it. I tried to sleep for about 35 minutes until I realized I wasn't going to sleep. Most brutal 3 hours of driving I've ever done and I'll never do that drive again.

I used to do that drive after every semester to and from LSU when I was traveling home to South FL. The panhandle is the worst part by far. Battling sleep sucks.

I used to say that until I had a newborn. If you are sleepy enough, it is hard to stay awake even for short distances.

Yep the panhandle is the most boring shite in the world. Somehow the open road of west Texas is more interesting than tree tree tree tree tree tree tree tree tree

If you're exhausted it's pretty easy. There's not much that can keep someone awake in that case. It's happened to me before. It's like you blink and it's almost impossible to open your eyes back up. Almost ended bad for me once. I was literally 3 minutes from the house when I dozed off. Veered towards the side of the road and smoked a curb on the perimeter of the gas station. Blew out my tire.

Despite that holy shite moment, I still almost dozed off again in the mile between there and the house. If your body is exhausted and needs to shut down, it's going to shut down.

If I feel it coming on now, I stop driving. Don't care if I have to park on the side of the interstate and sleep. Almost did that coming back from the Alabama/Tennessee game last year but luckily passed a gas station when it started to hit me and pulled in there and napped

Did you sue the school for that B.S.? or was the reason you didn't get back until late your fault? Could you have ridden the bus to and from said game?

Pretty much the same way as they do it under other circumstances. Eyes close, head nods. Boom.

quote:

I have had to pull over before to rest or make myself more alert, but in all my years I have never come close to actually falling asleep.

I've only fallen asleep where my hands left the wheel for less than a second on a couple of occasions. I'm not proud of it, but it is what it is.

Falling asleep is far more dangerous and inexcusable than regular drunk driving but we as a society don't tend to shame drivers that fall asleep as much.

I shame myself. I shame others. Drinking and driving is a conscious act. Texting and driving is a conscious act. Driving with too little rest is a conscious act. Being careful is "on purpose." - Driving recklessly, impaired or distracted is shameful behavior and it is dangerous to others.

It should be eliminated.

You were mos def in the wrong place then. But you could have gotten a $40 bag of Peruvian marching powder and made it home no problem.

That stretch from about Niceville to Lake City is exceedingly brutal.

huh, it is more excusable to knowingly drive while drunk than to accidentally fall asleep when you didn't want too!?!?

I guess that means you regularly drive drunk.
