How did Maryland and Delaware escape the South’s cultural orbit?

Coming up in elementary through high school, every social studies textbookbook labeled Maryland and Delaware as “the South.”

The US Census Bureau still considers it the South.

But most of these days, you don’t see them mentioned in cultural conversations about the South. So what gives?

It’s because they had slaves. Culturally I wouldn’t say they are southern. More that mid-Atlantic block.

Maryland and Delaware are FULL of white trash motherfrickers on par with any Livingston Parish trailer park.

Virginia used to be one of the most southern states. Now it’s hardly the south at all

So are Ohio and Pennsylvania, that doesn't make them Southern. That just makes bro country popular.

Laws against interracial marriage in Delaware weren't repealed until 1986. Only Mississippi and Alabama had these laws on their books longer.

That's true. I was just thinking of Trashy LP and it's meth and racism. But that is prevalent in the midwest too.

I dunno. If West Virginia is Southern, then this little wedge stuck way up in between Ohio and Pennsylvania grants Ohio and Pennsylvania at least some measure of “Southerness.”

You can literally travel northeast from some parts of Ohio and travel into Pennsylvania by passing through the South.

I actually had sweet tea at a café in Maryland about 25 miles NW of DC 9 years ago.

It's the South.

Ignoring the obvious criticism of these laws’ inherent racism, it’s always hilarious just how untenable they are.

A) under “one drop” criteria, almost no one is purely white

b) eventually, if strictly carried as rigidly as possible, on a long enough timeline, it would lead to inbreeding depression in white people

As a Western PA native, I can say w/100% certainty that Western PA is the Midwest and Pittsburgh is a Midwestern town.

And so is the Northern WV panhandle.

I live in that part of WV actually. It's only about 5 miles wide but it's noticeably more Southern here than across the Ohio or PA line. Not saying it's full-blown South but the accents here are definitely more Southern than anything you'd find in Pittsburgh. Likely people from different parts of the state though.

Pittsburgh is a strange case in general though. It's definitely more of an Appalachian city than a Mid-Atlantic city

Lincoln deployed the army to prevent Maryland from seceding.

I don’t know about Delaware, but Maryland was overrun by transplants the way Virginia was later. There are pockets of southern culture left, but the state is largely ruined.
