We'd use trains if they were convenient and functioned well.

A flight from MSY to LAX is under 4 hours

How long is that train ride?

I’m a train advocate like OP, but it won’t work in most of the US. A link between the big Texas cities, higher frequencies in the corridor between Atlanta and DC, and the proposed (and hopefully soon to be live) Gulf route between NOLA and Mobile are much needed.

As much as I love long distance train travel, getting to the west coast from Chicago by train is not cost effective nor time feasible. It’s more of a luxury activity nowadays (and priced accordingly by Amtrak).

I mean, picture this: cruising through the heart of the bayou on a train, immersing yourself in that unique Southern charm. It would be pretty amazing connecting NOLA to Houston, right?

It's called the Sunset Limited. Nothing is stopping you from doing right now!

Fix our roads and bridges that are falling down around our ears before we dump untold billions into a commuter rail system in this country that is how much bigger than all of Europe?

You want rail? Really? I don't think you want to pay for that rail.

More folks than you’d think. Mobile and NOLA have surprisingly pedestrian friendly city centers in which the train stations are located. Whenever I take the train to Nola I can get off and walk pretty much anywhere downtown or in the FQ.

The key is having a station that is in a walkable city or town center…it won’t work otherwise.

Some NOLA resident would just steal one of them and do donuts in an intersection.

There are no commuter trains in my area. There is no public transportation of any kind. I have a commute to work that can easily exceed 2 hours each way given the traffic. I am not duped by Elon Musk. I wouldn't drive a Tesla if I was given one for free. I see no need for an EV in any case. Climate change is nothing but a hoax.

I looked into a train to Miami from Jax one time for work.

Something like 11 hours not near where I wanted to be and still would need a ton of Ubers or a rental car.

No thanks.

I truly wish public transportation was more reliable and safe in this country. First, you would need reliable/safe bus service throughout said cities, then trains from city to city. Without viable public transport within destinations, trains to and from aren’t that helpful.
