Altenator went bad and the car died at midnight heading back from the airport. Triple A recommended the place and i went with it since I'm new to Houston

what if you were wrong about what the car trouble was all about? They prob have to do the diag no matter what.

Dunno about the FI kit.

I mean $830 for an alternator and battery (doubt that was needed) replacement is kind of absurd.

This is really the first time I've ever had car issues, so I'm genuinely curious. It seems like they did good work and had it ready same day.

$400

Waits says the average price to replace an alternator with a remanufactured one is $400, while Gunning adds that a remanufactured alternator on a typical, domestic car, costs about $300 to $500, including parts and labor. The price of a new alternator can run from $500 to $1,000.Jan 19, 2015

from google. add on another ~$100 for a battery.

Depends on the car, tbh.

Some alternators are high cost and can be difficult to change.

What kind of car?

A battery is gonna be around $100, at least.

Yep it is. Only way around it is swapping them out yourself and saving almost half the cost in labor.

Confused about the FI kit...was that something you requested in addition to replacing the alternator/battery?

Tell him F off and do what you ask him to fix. If not, you'll take your car elsewhere where they do this for free (lots of places do it these days). He doesn't have some magic diagnostic reader back there that a common person can't get ahold of.

Just look up the price online and compare. O-Reilly or Autozone probably carries the part. Go buy it yourself and tell them to put it in for you. If they give you some crazy labor charge, then look up a video on how to replace it and see how involved it is. If it takes someone on youtube 10 minutes to replace, then don't pay the guy $200 in labor.

I dont think there was any issue with the battery. It jump starts fine and was holding a charge fine until the alternator went out. I don't mind paying for the new battery, but I'm just not sure it was warranted

I just don't understand what it has to do with the alternator/battery

Wife picked it up and paid for it already, so it is probably a lost cause. Just want to be knowledgeable for next time

A quick google shows a range of $200 to $400 for the alternator.

A 2007 would def. need a battery, if the OEM battery had never been changed.

I don't think you got hosed.

Uh what kind of car do you drive? An F1?

I have an X5 and the battery at the DEALER is 600 which is a rip off.

Can you drive the car to another shop?

easiest alternator in the world to change. 4.0l v-6. Only takes me like 10 minutes to change them.

Plus the alternator for those is only like $115
