Toyota is also canceling a car this year.

Honda is discontinuing sales of the $17,145 subcompact hatchback in the U.S. at the end of the 2020 model year, along with those of the 2-door Civic Coupe.

Barring any major changes, that means Honda’s lowest-priced model next year will be the Civic Sedan at $21,775, with the Fit-based HR-V crossover $120 more.

Performance fans should note that the sporty Civic Si model will also not be offered in 2021, but will return when an all-new Civic arrives in 2022

Honda sold just 13,887 Fits through the first half of this year, compared to 36,895 HR-Vs and 127,858 Civics. It’s best-selling model is the CR-V, which has found 138,898 homes this year.

Toyota recently announced it will end sales of its subcompact Yaris hatchback and sedan models this year as the market continues its shift toward utility vehicles.

The market isn’t soft - it’s just shifting towards crossovers and SUVs.

Both of these cars along with the discontinued Toyota Yaris, Ford Focus, and Chevy Cruze were popular with younger first time buyers that needed affordable, fuel efficient transportation. It seems unwise not to have something kids can afford, as they eventually step up to a nicer, more expensive model later...but apparently they just couldn’t move enough of them to justify their existence.

Honda’s Civic sedan and Civic 5 door hatchback are not being canceled.

Nissan still offers the Sentra and Versa for small car shoppers, but there are rumors that the Maxima may get the axe this year.

Guess parents are getting tired of funding their little commie bastards’ vehicles.

They may be true, but the Honda Fit, Chevy Sonic (canceled for 2021), and Ford Fiesta (canceled last year) were very good cars for what they were.

Americans aren’t renting as many cars, so they can’t dump them into Enterprise/Avis fleets as easily. And retail car sales tend to go towards SUVs and crossovers.

Accord sport is a damn good looking car for not much more than a civic. It also gets close to 40mpg.

That's a shame. Those are both good little cars.

I’m shocked affordable sedans are falling out of popularity. Most entry level prices for crossovers and SUV’s are in the 30’s and 40’s. It’s way too much.

I agree. You can get a brand new little Honda for $20k and easily keep for 10 years and put 200k miles on it

Heck, most vehicles today cost more than my house when I bought it.

It seems too many people measure their self esteem by what they drive.

If we can't afford some tricked out ,overpriced fortress, buy something sensible and affordable til we get what we want.

I understand that.

I’m uncomfortable spending $40-$50k for a new vehicle for myself - especially given how most of them rust out up here after about 10 years.

I have a 7 year old Subaru that I tolerate driving. It’s not perfect but it is safe, reliable, and serves its purpose well. I like having a vehicle that isn’t too nice to leave in a parking garage overnight or worry about door dings or salt spray. I have the necessary tools to change the light bulbs and adjust the brakes if needed. It can tow a small trailer and it’s great in the snow. When it becomes too unreliable to keep around, I’ll either get another one just like it or a mid sized/small pickup like a Nissan Frontier or Chevy Colorado (whatever is on sale at the time).

My wife has a nicer, more expensive car than me. Her commute is about 3 miles, so I shouldn’t have to replace that one for a long time.

7 years is crazy for a personal vehicle loan. You’ll be underwater for 6 years! I’m the guy who will proudly drive an Altima or Accord and save money. Don’t need a big truck to compensate for anything.

Car is a death trap. Got the worst safety ratings for a Honda.
