More or less. Other than using the areas for machine votes, the powers-that-be in the city (black, white, Latino - all the same) really don't put a lot of effort into rehabilitating these areas. There are some hipster neighborhoods (like East Humboldt Park) that are butting up against some real, no-shite hoods (West Humboldt Park), so there is friction at those places sometimes, but other than that...
quote:
Nola can't do that since the city has bad and good areas so mixed.
You have to remember that most of this is happening 10 miles or more from downtown (in the far Southside) or in what is essentially a no-go zone right off the Eisenhower (the Heroin Highway) in the near Westside. These places are so far from the center of economic, cultural, and civic life in Chicago both mentally and physically that they might as well be in different states. Think about how far removed the Bronx is culturally physically in terms of an urban life from Manhattan - it is similar here.
I am familiar with the lay out of NO, and I've lived in places like that, too. You are correct - it is a different dynamic. That really doesn't happen any more in Chicago after they tore down all the huge project complexes (especially Cabrini Green) in the 1990's and 2000's; that cleared the last major violent neighborhood out from what otherwise be considered a nice area.

Do you think these people are just going to kill each other off eventually?
No, and I don't view it like that. The violence isn't that high. I mean it's high, don't get me wrong, but there are probably half a million people living in these no-go neighborhoods. Some pull themselves out; some leave for greener pastures (especially Southern cities recently); some stay in Garfield Park and Englewood and Austin and Chicago Lawn for the rest of their lives and continue the cycle.

I sure do. I've never been to the parts of the city where this is happening nor will I ever. In my 5 years here I've never seen any crime or felt unsafe. It might sound harsh but there really is two different cities here. Some of the richest neighborhoods I've ever seen with more high-end restaurants in the metro area than you could hope to eat at in a decade, then if you go south of Chinatown or west of the United Center it's seriously a freakin war zone.

Chicago is a great city of you simply avoid the ghetto. Which is easy to do. Unlike Nola where the ghetto is never far away. The OT just loves to slam Chicago Bc it's seen as an indictment of Obama.

Funny you say that - there actually are some super-nice areas on the Southside. Hyde Park, obviously, is very nice, and places like Beverly are as nice as anywhere in the city. Bridgeport and South Shore are also pretty cool. I didn't really see much of it until recently, but they are there if people venture out there.
I think it's easy to forget just how big and how many people live on the Southside is as well. It's big enough on its own to support its own professional baseball team.

Those damn gun shows.
If we could just make those illegal then all this would be solved.

And how many arrest have been made?

What are you talking about? Those gun restrictions were over turned years ago.

Last year had one of the coldest winters in Chicago history, and this year has been very warm (it was in the 60's this weekend). That is also playing a part in this. Usually it's too cold in January and February for there to be significant violence here (summers are an entirely different story).
GLOBAL WARMING KILLING BLACK PEOPLE IN CHICAGO
goddamn racist arse weather, holding the black man down.

the outright gun ban was overturned, however Chicago does still have some strict gun laws.

Do you guys think it would help if these people murdering each other knew they could get in trouble for having a gun? Maybe we need a "get the word out" campaign.

The obsession with Chicago shootings is real.
Chicago is about 1000000x safer than Nola and 1000000x more interesting than br

It's always worth noting murder rates. NOLA is running away with that one, in comparison.
