What do you guys think? Are they worth the investment, do you think they add to resale value?

Exactly how do the costs break down?

I’d rather get OT’s advice and knowledge before I call for estimates.

TIA

My parents have a Generac and they really seem to be happy with it. Runs everything in the house.

You’ll need a service contract as well. Every 6 months, they’ll come out and keep it in top working condition.

Yes they’re worth the investment. Yes it helps resale. Depends on the size of the house for size and price of generator. 2200sqft home $10kish

This and the better ones have a timer that will auto start once a month and run for 5-30 mins at a time.

You have to add that into the cost of owning one too!

I have been in my house for 7 years. I have lost power maybe 8 times for a total of 3 days. For me, it would not be a good investment.

I would have never purchased one but now have a house that had one when we purchased. It is great.

That said, mine didn’t come in this weekend when we lost power. I had it serviced in April with no problems reported. Dude came out Saturday and diagnosed a board was bad and blowing fuses. Didn’t have the part. Luckily we only lost power for a few minutes the rest of the weekend. It caused me to really worry about it both days though.

Hope it gets fixed today or tomorrow.

The price depends greatly on your service size

I don't think it really does anything to the value of the house, but it will absolutely be a selling point when showing your house off. Mine cost a little over $10,000 (installation included). It's a Generac 22kW, rated to run my entire home flawlessly.

There aren't a whole lot of things I like to brag about, but I can't stress enough how much of a peace of mind you will get once you get over the sticker shock and brief buyer's remorse for something that just sits in your backyard next to your house and that's it. Take for instance, this past weekend. In years past, I would have been stressed the frick out dealing with the PTSD (ok not really, but kinda) of having had to sit through power outages of multiple weeks (Gustav, Andrew, other hurricanes and floods in the 80's, etc.) The thought of hurricane immediately used to bring to my mind that thought of being trapped in a house that's hot, sticky, eating shitty food, bored, etc. I don't care how people dress that up, it fricking sucks.

Since I've gotten the generator, it's just business as usual. Life does not get disrupted. You're not sitting there stressing thinking, "ok when is the power going out". You're also not running around town trying to find a generator or having to run and install one for the inlaws, etc. Not having to go stand in long arse lines at the gas station when power does go out. There's a large part of stress that will be erased from your life. Some people might call this a little bit ridiculous. But take it from me, you're making a wise decision bud. I had Chustz Electric install and maintain mine. Very reasonable, did a good job.

Holy crap that’s just not worth it to do without power for a few hours, I’ll just read a book.

but when a Gustav or a Katrina comes through and you need it for 2 weeks it is a bit different

I haven't used mine since hurricane Gustav, but it's a GREAT peace of mind.

edit: it ran for 8 days after Gustav

Right. The people who chime in and say shite like that haven't had to sit with no power for multiple weeks at a time. I'm in my 40's, and from my childhood to adulthood I could probably say about half a dozen times that's happened. And it sucks.

Longest I’ve ever been without is about a week during an ice storm but it wasn’t so bad, made it work.

Our house was already pre wired with the transfer switch. Got a 22kw for around 4 grand, it’s worth every penny when you have kids. Runs the entire house

If you had been out of power like we have in south Louisiana during the 80's, 90's, 2000's, and Gustav - you'd be singing a different tune.

I personally wouldn't get one unless I knew for sure I had no intentions of ever moving from that house. Like some others have mentioned, it is rare that very long power outages occur. The longest I ever remember is no power for a month when Rita hit Lake Charles back in 2005. That was in the most extreme scenario.

The only negative is your house will fill up quick with family and friends when their is a big outage for an extended period of time.

bullshite. I would say that it's rare that we haven't been hit by any really bad hurricanes lately. We're kind of running on luck right now.
