Looking into home security systems.

My house is prewired but doesn't have any equipment. What's the best way to go? Should I hire a company to monitor or just install? Is it something I can install myself?

I'm pretty decent with that type of thing but it just looks like a jumble of wires right now, I haven't really looked at it.

What do typical security companies charge for install/monitoring?

Most will "give" you installation and equipment if you sign a contract with them. So, if you plan on signing on for monitoring, might as well go that route, unless you just really like wiring and troubleshooting.

I have a dog and plenty of guns but that's not what I'm asking about.

Just get you a sign of a security company and put it in your yard. That serves as much purpose as actually having one.

Wireless systems are extremely easy and interface on the monitor or completely online. Even the cheapest plans you can see what door opened when, along with being able to grant remote access to a visitor if you want.

Since the house is prewired I would go the hard wired route. It's more reliable, secure, and cheaper. I would call a local company for install and monitoring.

It's for the girlfriends peace of mind. I'd rather have something in place and her feel comfortable than have to hear about it every time I head to the camp.

Obligatory "don't worry about it baw, I keep her company when you're at the camp."

ETA: but to answer the question. In my opinion the monitor is only really good for fire, as long as it's on and loud as frick, anybody breaking in is going to beat feet when they hear it go off. Plus it'll wake up the dog and the missus... Just make sure she can handle the glock, if ya know what I'm saying....

All of that is replaceable. Some of us stupid fricks with guns prioritize family and ourselves.
