Guy has been around a long time building houses. Real easy to get along with throughout the construction phase.

Ive worked with ALL these guys and a few others that have been mentioned throughout this thread. Ill just tell you now, for building in UC and Lexington, Telich, Bernhard, and Craft are going to be at and/or $200 sqft. The others mentioned in this list have built dozens of homes in both subdivisions.

I would avoid Lynch
Craft, Bernhard Norman, Vertical, Simmeneaux, Schramm, are worth considering
I have no experience with Cagley so can't comment
Bardwell is good but might be covered up with his current project

Lots of good names have been thrown out. LA Custom would be a great choice. Schramm great choice also. Just be aware that not all names on that list will be allowed to build in the two neighborhoods listed. Both have strict policies on approved builders. Make sure your builder is accepted before you dive off with one of them and then the developer not allow them to build. LA Custom, Schramm, Cagley are all acceptable names for Lexington.

Corbin Ladner
Used him once and will not be using him again. I know several other people that recently had houses built by Corbin and they feel the same way. Overall most people are happy with the their houses but he makes the process painful. He's very unorganized which then turns into several mistakes being made by his contractors. Don't look for him during hunting season either, your house can wait until he gets back even though the contractors will keep working and then you are stuck trying to get things corrected. All this means you are constantly having to look over the shoulders of the contractors. Unlike what his website claims, communication wasn't good. He doesn't own up to mistakes much less apologize when they happen.

Good to know Bc I'm also in the building process and want to know honest first hand feedback.

Couldn't disagree more. He build my home and has come back a few times to take care of stuff that other builders would have not given a crap about. I think he's an honest guy.
yeah, he built my house too..... but when he threatened to basically put a for sale sign in the front yard before we closed on the house, while my wife was 9 months pregnant, after we sold our old house, and were living in a one bedroom apartment with our 3 year old, because we pointed out too much stuff on the walk through.... he got pissed off, said "evidently we don't meet your expectation, so we'll just find another buyer", and then wouldn't return my phone calls when trying to get an explanation....
we were scared of losing the house we designed from day one, after 2 years of fallen through deals with other builders, and here we are, days away from closing, and he wanted to pull the house from under us, when my wife was due any day.... in fact, the day we moved in, oct. 3rd, she went into labor that night.... we would have been really, really fricked had he kept the antics up and had we not gotten word through his realtor that we would have taken legal action...
and my neighbor, who he built their house as well, had the EXACT same story, minus the pregnant wife....
evidently, the company is blaming it on "health trouble" and all sorts of other ridiculous shite, but our experience with him was really, REALLY bad... Robert was OK and all, but Jerry.... i'd shoot him if he steps foot on my property, and aside from this one post, i will not tell a soul who built my house, as to give word of mouth advertising to that frick....

Damn that's crazy to hear. Passman built our house and it all went fine. Robert fixed every little thing my wife came up with on the walk through and showed up anytime we called after that. I felt like there were several times during the bidding process where they saved us from our inexperience and could've potentially cost themselves the job because they weren't saying what we wanted to hear. To me they came off very honest and patient.
Sorry to hear your experience went so badly. It was stressful enough building a house with a non-pregnant wife and zero issues. I can't imagine going through what you did. I'd need a new liver.

Nice line but it kind of reminds me of the Ford commercials of the late seventies when they compared the Ford Grenada to a Mercedes Benz.

most of the process went smoothly, as we were very prepared, and being it was our 2nd house we built, we had experienced the building process already...
the only complaint, aside from the obvious, was that it just seemed that they really didn't want to do the newer style of houses (look at some of those other house built by other builders in this thread- white painted brick, more modern styling, etc)... they wanted to do the same old French chateau, cookie cutter Baton Rouge styled shite that EVERYONE else has.... and god forbid you want to go with something other than their recommended suppliers.... i mean, you can find really good deals online, and if you are a custom home builder, shouldn't you be more tolerant of people wanting to "customize" to what they want and what they can afford?? i should mention, that NONE of the online ordered things were late, and in fact they were delivered to him, weeks in advance, as to not disrupt the building process....
and i'm sure he didn't like when we supplied a lot of our own things, like our freestanding tub, dining room light, etc., because by supplying our own stuff, he couldn't uncharge us for those items because he wasn't the supplier.... he was constantly trying to talk us into going with the same old, same old just for his own sake, giving us a ton of shite for not wanting to just settle on what his suppliers had vs. what we really wanted... they wanted to take on the job, because of the amount of money, but didn't really want the challenge of building outside of their "norm"....
Robert is still coming back to fix things now, and that part, them fixing the little things that are left after the fact, does do a lot for their reputation and customer service, but they will have to totally grade my backyard, since it's not draining water at all.... looks like Lake Ponchartrain in my back yard after it rains...

Have you considered contracting out yourself? It'll save an assload of money!!

I've been told that contracting it out yourself doesn't save as much as people think because the contractors charge you more for the work than they would charge a builder. I was also told the builders get much better deals on material. Obviously the builder must charge more to make money so it's almost a wash and you have to deal with the headache of coordinating the contractors. That's just what I have been told by someone who recently wanted to try it then decided not to.

Makes sense. I'm sure the subs are less expensive and more loyal to the builders who uses them more often than one and done.

Nick Cagley is building my home now and I have no complaints. This is the second home I've built in 3 years, and I can tell you that, paramount to all else, he does what he says he's going to do. Our first go round, with a builder who did a very high volume, we were constantly told that things would happen and they wouldn't. When Nick tells you he's going to do something, he does it. If something is 2 weeks out, he tells you. We are very happy with him.
Nick Cagely has a great reputation and is outstanding.
