take a yoga class. if you are single, you will meet women in good shape.

after you do the class for a few months, buy a book on pranayama or just get one from the library if you are in a big city where a library would have such a thing. the two work together. most people do not know or do pranayama.

the whole thing is synergistic. hatha yoga and pranayama. the teacher may introduce some pranayama in the class. I have been in classes where they did a bit.

the "official" instruction is to do the hatha yoga in the AM and pranayama in the evening, i.e. not mix them. But the "official" instruction presumes more than a few minutes of instruction.

Do not do more than 5 minutes at a sitting of pranayama to start.
you can gradually add components for up to 30 minutes.
There are actually several pieces to it, not just the one that is made fun of, the one where the person holds their nose and does alternate nostril breathing. You can actually start without that. Just make the inhale and exhale of equal length for a few minutes. Also then, see how long you can hold your breath without aggravation. That will be a piece that matters, once you get into it. So you can practice holding your breath a few times a day. NOT WHILE DRIVING. I read about some dude a few months ago, who got in an accident holding his breath. he lost consciousness. I am guessing he was under the influence of something.

Photography.

It's an excuse to be out and about, and if you have any talent at it, it is an easy conversation piece to share with others.

It's also technical enough to stoke your nerd side.

Just remember that good photos are a product of the photographer, not someone with a 1500 dollar camera with a 1000 dollar lens.

get out and walk in your neighborhood. the increased oxygen flow will make you feel better, you'll feel better about yourself because you accomplished something, and you'll meet lonely housewives working in their yards.

Join a running group that gets together a couple times a week and is training for something (half or full marathon).

Golf

Fishing. A lot of bass clubs you can join as a non - boater and they'll pair you up with a boater for tourneys. Once a month. Usually pretty cool guys and a laid back atmosphere.

Lt me throw out genealogy. It can be really interesting, just be prepared that you may run across a few blacksheep in the family as you are going through.

The cool thing about the hobby is (depending on your ancestry) it can open up membership in various groups such as Sons of the American Revolution. These groups typically have great meetings with interesting speakers on a variety of topics.

If you live in a rural area, I'd consider gardening... I've been on a gardening kick lately and it is rewarding to see stuff grow under your care.

Also love the idea of brewing beer. It's easy and fun.

Before suggestions, I'm curious about a few things.
-how small and rural is your town?
-do you have to live there? If so, why?
-how old are you?
-do you have pets or would you consider one? If not, why not?
-when you say tech what do you mean: mechanical/physical tech, or computer/theoretical tech? Do you like plaing w gadgets?

Regardless of your answers I do agree w starting yoga. It is proven to have multiple benefits on well being.
