Well, that sort of gives it away... Teddy Roosevelt's Great White Fleet. Went around the world on a tour of goodwill, if I remember my history classes.

No. Really the only German wasrship I could remember was the Bismarck. I'm not as up on my WWII history as I should be. I'm a much bigger ancient history buff. And I prefer Revolutionary and Civil War history to WWII. But I still find it all fascinating.

You're thinking of the opening of Japan by Commodore Perry in 1853.
