Ok, this is conclusive proof that the War on Drugs kills more than it saves. The failure on heroin and opiates particularly means we need to reevaluate everything in the War on Drugs. That is simply inexcusable. 23% spike in deaths? What the shite?

What is the alternative with heroin?

Not neccessarily. if we were to change our attitude towards drug use, we could get it down.

of course, we won't so you are probably right.

I feel very lucky that while I have known several people that got hooked on opoids, no one close to me has died. I have known several people that have, but they were always people I barely knew/FOAF, that type of stuff.

Considering how much drugs I have done, and how much drugs I have seen done, this is quite surprising.

I know a guy that is hooked on opiods. He limits himself to 3x per week, but I don't believe him. middle class guy, nice house in the burbs, professional job. seriously hot wife.

many of the deaths due to heroin are due to inconsistent strengths or adulterants. they were selling K as H in vancouver a few years ago, several people had ODs, although it really hard to die of a K overdose.

If we could regulate and monitor supply and usage, I think we could get deaths down. Might increase the user base though.

There's been plenty proof already that the war on drugs has failed. Politicians could not care less.

And it is somewhat frustrating that these junkies with no self control are ruining it for the rest of us. So people with legit pain will get prescribed useless ultram bc of fearful doctors and heavy handed DEA.

Then who would fund the "Counter-Terrorism" war. It isnt going to be funded by selling potatoes

You can blame someone for doing heroin the first time, but after that it's one of the most addictive things on this planet. It's not about being weak.

With opiates at large, for starters, doctors need to be held accountable more than they currently are in prescribing it. Heroin is just a part of the opiate addiction, but the cause is much larger than drug dealers. The average Americans addiction to prescription is the main cause of the opiate epidemic, not the fact that heroin is easy to find. The average guy isn't going to go out and shoot up heroin. It's the people in a world of shite that do that.

And also, we need to stop throwing every single person carrying some drugs straight into the joint. So some guy is found with half an ounce of heroin, and they throw him in the slammer for 2 years. He's going to come out way more fricked than he did going into it. Instead invest in rehab for these people instead of prison. It's absolutely insane to me that we don't do this.

It seems like such a tricky proposition. Do you make it available to anyone who just wants to give it a go?

It would take a serious reimagining of the American view of drug use.

There are chemicals out there that would reduce drug related crime and recidivism rates in the jails if the government would look at putting money towards rehabilitation instead of punishment.

NO amount of jail time has ever got an addict to stop being addicted to a chemical.

Maybe the threat of jail has and then they went into a program but jail in itself is not a treatment program.

I had to get a pretty minor dental procedure done not too long ago. It's expected you'll go through about 2 or 3 days of pain afterwards, so I was prescribed 30 pills of Oxycontin.

30 freaking pills. For 2-3 days of pain. I thought it was a mistake when I picked the prescription up, but apparently that's the norm.

It is not hard to see why so many people are getting hooked on opioids and eventually to heroin.

That is not normal. That is insane. But if you consider that now oxycodone is the same schedule as hydrocodone why not write a script of oxy? It's a redicous situation forced in part by bad legislative policies.

yes, its a trade off. I am not qualified to advocate a real plan on it, but obviously that won't stop me from doing so.

I think it depends on our end goal. Is it harm reduction? Or is fewer users? Fewer deaths? If you are going for harm reduction, monitoring supply and usage, is the way to go. but not everyone is on the harm reduction train.

This made me laugh. I just pictured someone giving heroin tourists the safety speech before trying it, kinda like a skydiving instructor.

No it means you are a weak minded degenerate w/zero self control and this is coming from a person with a family member who is an addict

I bet the percentage of "casual" heroin users that come about due to free use would be minimal but it is a funny proposition.

Dad decides to try heroin This Saturday at the LSU tailgate just for the frick of it.

You need to get into alanon so you can work through your feeling towards your loved one that is OBVIOUSLY just bubbling inside of you. Don't let their addiction tear you up. Get some support
