Recent posts have made me reflect on the collective intelligence of the OT. If you can sift through the PIIHB responses, you can find a wealth of knowledge here. The autism thread cemented this point, calling the local doc a quack for her gluten free/chelation approach, and advocating ABA therapy (which is the only therapy in randomly controlled trials to help with autism). I guess when you get 10,000 people together, it self selects for the people who have real life experience.

For example, an OT thread by a 6'4" plane rider bitching about the lack of foot room in coach class. Anyone 6'2" or over echoes the sentiments (maybe 50 people out of the 1000 or so currently online). Same with the 30+ ACT score and post responses.

The sum of these responses is that everyone on the OT is tall, with an ACT over 30, etc. (i.e. Net worth of a million, running a 4.4 40, etc), whereas people without that attribute will not respond to the post.

I want to see some other replies before I comment

Lots of variables involved. Many times, the most vociferous posters seem to outnumber the more reserved ones, but they remind me of a herd of braying jack asses.

Sometimes a thread will seem to have unanimous support in one direction, and then there will be a reasonable objection asserted, which leads the thread to swing in the opposite direction.

I'll take the assumption.

Correct sir. Don't forget your dealing with with the upper class here.

Another example: the lexapro thread. 23 responses from people who actually took lexapro or a similar SSRI/ another antidepressant. That type of feedback is great.

That's just not true, i'm as humble as they come. I'm only 5'11" which isn't that tall, I never took the ACT, I have a net worth of only $950,000, and I run a solid 4.6 40.

I bet you feel dumb now.

I probably should've titled the thread "selective bias on the OT".

"Vox populi, vox Dei."

Really important historical phrase in governmental philosophy. The idea that the People, en masse, will be closer to the Truth/more accurate in solving problems than one particular group or another - i.e. the "elites" or intelligentsia... even if that group has a higher average IQ. The reason is that we all have different experiences. En masse we call all draw from those experiences to determine the best course of action.

I only come to the OT if there's a historical thread.

Or if there's a chance to frick with SFP.
