I bought an old camp house that had been vacant for 6 months or so. House has cleaned up real nice, except for one bathroom that always has a soil smell that comes from it. Before I or a plumber starts tearing things apart, what else can I do? Let bleach sit in the bowl and then flush it? Any other products to try? TIA.

Gross.

Pour drano in there, then leave a gallon of bleach in bowl for a few days.

Can also put the capsules in the back part of the toilet.

Not sure any of that will help though. Is it a septic tank?

Did you look in the tank? Could be moldy in there. Also you might have a clogged vent

The capsules will make the plastic flaps leak at some point so just be aware of that.

If you have a modad check the agitator. It might not be running.

If it is, there are tons of products you can try. Google is your friend.

Oh yeah, I do like one a year.

They are corrosive.

ETA:

The ones that last like 10 flushes or so. Just a quick clean up for any mold/mildew.

Those tablets are basically chlorine. It is very corrosive and it will dry out the plastic that the flaps are made of and usually warp them also.

If you use bleach, after a couple of days flush a rid-ex treatment down.

Check the wax seal under the toilet.

Yes, septic.

Good deal, I think I'll install a whole new toilet, that will take care of moldy tank or wax seal, do some bleach, draino and tank treatment.

Might be a good time to get that drain line cleaned out while the toilet is removed. Do you have access to the plumbing to know where it goes from the toilet to the septic tank? If it is one mostly straight shot you could get it washed out by going through there.

You may not even need a new toilet. Take the old one outside and clean it up then reinstall it. I just put a new one in my daughter's bathroom this summer, but I had already replaced the guts in the tank twice and was still having issues. It was original to this 50 year old house and a new toilet was about $100 and it came with new wax ring and everything I needed to install except a longer braided water supply. Old one was lower and the new was chair height, so I needed an extra few inches. Story of my life.

look under the tank behind the toilet, the tank often sweats and gets wet under there and then it grows a thick layer of black mold under there, its pretty common to see that in unused houses that sit vacant for a while, also look between tank and wall as the mold grows on the wall and the back of tank as well

Classic sign that you have a snake or family of snakes living in the toilet.

Make sure you have water in your ptraps. (Sink, floor drain and commode)

Your commode probably needs a new wax ring.
