Our child is going to a National convention in Nashville ... host hotel is booked and hotels near the host hotel are booked. What is traffic/public transportation like there?

Convention is at Opryland Hotel ... is staying downtown a terrible idea? Husband will be coming to meet us after the convention is over to extend it to a family vacation ...

Are there any areas to totally avoid?

Downtown is pretty far from the Gaylord Opryland. But is cooler.

Is downtown cooler for music scene? That's what my husband is interested in. He's high school friends with a guy who's in a band there and wants to visit with him ... hoping he is able to give me some info as well.

If his high school buddy is Rhett Anthony...the club he plays at is not downtown...it's in what they call Mid-Town...Opryland is a dump kinda...

Honestly, his high school friend is Blake Shelton's drummer.

And is Opryland really dumpy? Where would you stay? Airport is far but decent?

Downtown is cooler. Opryland is ok a time or two but the music scene downtown is much more accessible.

Opryland hoses you for food & drink.

No to pics and thanks for the info. Would rather be near Opryland for convention purposes but am happy to change hotels once he gets there if it's worth it.

you could look into hotel rooms on Elm Hill Pike area which is down the road from Opryland. The trip from downtown to Opryland isn't too bad.

No, I would recommend staying downtown if you can swing it money-wise. Locals go out downtown sometimes so it's not just touristy.

Check out bars like Roberts(on Broadway, but a place musicians will go to) and Red Door(blend of all kind of people) The former for 'Nashville' and the latter for 'local'.

How long yall going to be there? Maybe check out the Parthenon at least for 3 minutes and then go to the Gulch for lunch somewhere.

Maybe check out Third Man Records and then ride down Music Row and head to Mafiaoza's for some good pizza.

Not sure how long yall are going to be there. I cringe sometimes at the recommendations of people who moved to Nashville and have lived there two years. What do you want to get out of it?

Well Purple, Thursday night - Monday noon will be with daughter at convention. From Monday at noon until probably Wednesday/Thursday it'd be family stuff. Will have 14 yo dtr and 17 yo son.

Husband is a musician and would love to check out some music history stuff, bars with good music (he'd have to do that with his friend .. kids =/= bars), the zoo, idk what else.

Husband and son would probably come on Sunday ... is 2-3 days ample time? This "awards" trip is going to cost me an arm and a leg but she gets to compete at the national convention so there's that. Life experience.

I don't know the answers to any of your questions...but one recommendation that I have for you is to eat at Puckett's Grocery...very cool vibe with live music, etc....

G Vice, tell your mom she placed first in the state with her Beta speech. I was SHOCKED and will be spending an arm and a leg BUT that's ok ... it's an opportunity of a lifetime for her!! Husband is excited -- silly me just assumed he wouldn't come!

I'm thinking staying by the airport may be my best bet as it's in the middle of the 2 places that we want to be/need to be and maybe I won't have to change hotels. I hate making travel plans.

I was impressed with the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville.
The museum starts with exhibits by the pioneers of the genre, with listening booths featuring Bessie Smith, Jimmy Rodgers, etc. Then proceeds with more and more modern artifacts, including a tribute to Hee Haw.
Brought my son with me the last time LSU played Vandy in football up there. Hope you enjoy it too.
