The people who had 1ft in their house would disagree that it matters

Yeah, somehow I'm not buying that we'll go another thousand years without a flood like this

The term 1000 year flood is very misleading. It does not mean we will go another 1000 years or even close to it before seeing another flood like this. It means there is only a .1% chance of that kind of flood happening every year. Technically, the odds are the same every single year and just because it happened one year doesn't mean the odds are lower for the next 999 years. It could happen next year, there is a .1% chance of it happening.

Here's an article from the advocate that has a good picture showing the proposed Darlington and Comie Diversion Project.

Re the Comite, how's the water getting from the proposed Canal into the Miss River? Why couldn't they do the same where Manchac meets the Miss River?

I wish they'd do manchac instead. The comite goes to the Amite anyway, which would go backwards through manchac and and get pumped over the levee.

We have the continents biggest drainage ditch in our backyard and we do everything we can to send water the other way.

After seeing all the devastation, and homes that "weren't supposed to flood" be underwater, I'm trying to convince a few people who didn't flood this time that they still need flood insurance.

Don't worry when FEMA redraws the flood maps everyone south of Alexandria will be in a flood zone.

So the diversion canal would have lowered the Amite by only 1.2 ft?

I can personally vouch for a buttload of people who would have loved for the water to be 1.2 ft lower than it was. I don't think there's a magical drain they can install that's going to completely eliminate a historical flood event like this.

They would have to install a water control structure.

They could do the same with any waterway that they wanted to connect to the river. Currently Bayou Manchac doesn't hit the MS River but there's nothing physically stopping them from digging a canal to accomplish the same thing though. Just takes money and time.
