I don't recline my seat out of courtesy... Laptop screen is at a crappy angle when a seat is reclined

I'm just not sure there is really a need for it from Atlanta to DC.

Yea, I don't really see the need on short flights. but this was a DEN-EWR...so it's a good 3+ hour haul and she was in a middle seat. Not to mention he was seated in the United premium economy section which provides more legroom.

Yea, I also try and make a point of what is going on behind me. If I see a guy working away on his laptop, I'll leave my seat up. If they are sleeping or its a kid and I'm on a 5:45am or 11:30pm flight...its going back.

They cannot tell me to jump out of the airplane or give me a felony... There are boundaries to what they can make me do.

I'm not wanting to start a debate, or prolonged discussion about this, but this is an area of which I'm very familiar. The airlines, being a service industry, believe it or not, want to be as accommodating as possible, but the truth is, when you get on an airliner the rules change. You temporarily don't have the same freedoms that you have in the rest of the earthly world. Like I said, the airlines are a service industry and don't won't to chase away business, but the rules on an airliner are a lot different than people imagine, and the powers to enforce them are readily in place.

I'd venture to say I recline my seat maybe 1 out of 10 times on a flight of under 90 minutes

I don't fly a ton, but I always recline my seat at least a little. I paid the same amount the person behind me did. If they don't like it, they go frick themselves

Link to rule or regulation? I could have sworn it says reasonable

Not everyone in Y pays the same amount. Delta has over 20 different fare classes

While they are heavily regulated by the DOT, they are stk a private company and can refuse to fly anyone not deemed "safe".

That's where he's going with this.

Yep. They're not very functional and I'm always amazed by the people who just slam their seats back as far as they go, with zero awareness of people behind them.

This.

I can't understand anyone saying the person annoyed with the reclining is being unreasonable or selfish.

The recliner is unreasonable, and outside of a red eye, pointless.

No, but that's partly true. There are strong federal regulations in place for U.S. airlines and those that wish to operate in U.S. air space. On the private side, if an airline has a policy that prohibits any passenger from wearing red pants on their airplane, then that's their right to enforce that policy, but being in the service industry they always succumb to the lowest common denominator of protocol.

And those regulations are all related to safety. The grey area comes in some of the language related to "intimidating" a crew member. Even politely disagreeing with a crew members instructions that aren't related to safety can then be construed as intimidation and thus the pax gets the boot.

And my point is that there are limits to the "blanket authority" be claims airline employees have

FWIW I have always replied with any of their requests nor have I ever heard an unreasonable request

yes, of course

"intimidating" a crew member.

sort of like degrees of assault

that's the best outcome for the person, and it's usually not prosecuted because the airline would rather not inconvenience the rest of the passengers because one person is being an a-hole, plus the incredible potential cost of shutting down the entire flight so that everyone involved, passengers included, can accompany LEO's to make statements

Frankly, screw that.

People tap tap tap away on their computers. Other people listen to headphones too loud, other people kick chairs, other people fart, other people talk loud, other people get drunk. If the worst thing I'm doing is using a function on my seat and you don't like it, pay more for first class.

If it is that big of a deal to you, pay for the upgrade. I don't always lean back, but if I want to I'm going to. Regardless of who is doing what behind me.

Eta: why should you be comfortable at the cost of my comfort. When the person in front of me has likely already reclined.
