Talking to a few people who work in Baton Rouge airport back in the 70s and 80s.
We got to talking about the new Barry Seal movie and how the movie exaggerates a lot of stuff.... While leaving out some even more outlandish things.
One of the old guys started laughing and talking about the time the governor flew down to south America for a dove hunt. On the way back, Barry was at the same small airport and said he was overweight and wanted the pilot to "throw some stuff in the back". Being they were friends, he did. He flew 3-400lbs of unknown cargo back to Louisiana in the governor's plane with the governor in it.
Definitely got a chuckle.
The old timers played the game fast and loose.

Wouldn't surprise me and would be one of the few times that EWE broke the law unwittingly.
Fighting the urge to jump in a Google/wiki hole... I've read a ton on Seal, just interesting to review some of the details.

Knowing Fast Eddie, he flew the load on a state plane and state fuel then charged Barry cash and put it in his pocket.

I bet ol' Edwin knew what was onboard and took his cut.

There wasn't much he didn't know.
Isn't much he doesn't know now either.
I'd give ten years of my life to have the knowledge floating around in his head.

Back in the 70's, my parents would help friends of theirs with their catering events...
One was some political event for Edwards.... Edwards was hitting on my mother while she was right next to my father... She told him my husband is standing right here, he replied back, "so"....
Dude had some balls...

Yeah, dammit, jumped into the hole.
Did our own WBRZ help out Seal? Factoid I never saw before:

In November of 1984, a documentary entitled "Uncle Sam Wants You" was produced and aired by WBRZ-TV in Baton Rouge. The documentary was prepared by investigative reporter John Camp and outlined Seal's experiences as a drug smuggler and federal informant.
Max Mermelstein, a former drug trafficker and member of the Medellin Cartel, testified that in December of 1984, he attended a meeting at the Miami home of Raphael Cardona-Salazar, another member of the Medellin Cartel...Away from the others, Mermelstein, Cardona-Salazar, and Cano watched a video of "Uncle Sam Wants You", and Mermelstein was instructed that he had been selected to take care of Barry Seal.

I love hearing stories of when he would gamble on the Belle...they'd shut down whatever deck level he was on...they said he was an amazing gambler.

i remember during the trial in the 80s he would sometimes walk BACKWARDS to the courthouse so the reporters covering him wouldn't have to
i also remember the prosecutor's daughter was at LSU at the time and she was catching all kinds of hell in class because her dad was after EWE.
i also remember the news barry seal was released to the halfway house off plank road and then the murder a couple days later. crazy that was happening right down the road.
good times.

On his campaign fundraising trip to France they went to Monte Carlo and he won over $10,000 playing craps.

Anyone have a link to further reading about Barry Seal? A non-wiki link?
