I'm going in October, what should I see, do, eat, etc? I've never been before. I'll be there for a week.

You need recommendations for stuff to do in NYC?

You'll get better food suggestions on the FDB. Much better.
You're going to get a lot of stupid stuff on here.
Any of David Chang's Momofuku places are excellent.

Catch the 7 line to Flushing. The food is very cheap and the sights are amazing.

Yes, I'd like to avoid the tourist traps. Thanks for your input.

Eat at Batard and at the bar at 15 East or Ichimura at brushstroke

How does someone who has never been to NY need recommendations? There are literally millions of things to do.
ETA: I recommend that you go see things. Try not to get mugged.

Stay in meat packing district, so many good food and bar options that you can just walk too. My favorite bar is the tipler, favorite restaurant was scarpetta in that area but there are literally 100 great spots.
Avoid Times Square, don't actually goto the statute of liberty (find a vantage point and snap a picture of it behind you, that's all you want anyway) top of the Rock is pretty sweet for a toursit trap, you can get some awesome pictures up there.
Buy a week pass and take the subway everywhere during the day, Uber or walk everywhere at night.

Spend the extra money for VIP tickets to the Empire State Building, tour Ellis island, if you can afford an upgraded room that looks out into Times Square, do it. Spend a day in Manhattan, go pay your respects to those we remember in the fallen twin towers, eat breakfast then walk through Central Park. The subways are easy to jump on and off, just get a map and plan your days so you don't waste time. I went for three days and didn't stop. One of the best trips I've taken.

Staten Island Ferry yo. Dirt cheap, and you ride right by it.

If you insist on going to the top of a building, for the love of god do this instead of waiting in line for the Empire State Building.

How does someone who has no recommendation comment in a thread asking for recommendations? Go drink bleach.

No need. The Top of the Rock is just as good.

tour Ellis island,
Fun for about ten minutes.

I'd rather overlook Central Park. Time Square is a just about the only true tourist trap. God I hate that place.

Told one of my buddies about the ferry (that's what we did the first time I went as well) and his wife freaked the frick out about all the sketchy people at the dock building so I have sense stopped suggesting that
Times Square is awful, it's just like bourbon street basically.
Momofuka is outstanding as the next poster suggested
