Have you ever tried to suck out venom from a buddy's snake bite?

Was showing my kiddo some old camping/hiking safety books and magazines from the 80s.

What in the frick prompted this idea ever to be circulated as the norm? Last I read several years ago this is the LAST thing you'd want to do.

Saliva accelerates the effects of venom.

Tourniquet above the bite and get to the hospital to receive anti-venom as fast as possible. Know what kind of snake bit you. If you can't identify the snake then kill it and take its dead body with you. But it is pretty easy to tell a copperhead from a cottonmouth from a rattlesnake. Copperhead looks like he has Hershey's kisses in a row from head to tail. Cottonmouth is dark brown to black and short and thick. Rattlesnake has a rattle.

Thank you and God Bless

NO. That is stupid and deadly advice. If a person can get to an ER within 45 mins, get to hospital and use only a light tourniquet on the way.

That movie stuff doesn't work in real life.

Didn't the old snake bite kits have a razor blade inside a small container that doubled as a suction device? You would slice the area and suck out the venom. Am I remembering this wrong?

Yeah I'm just going to ease out on a limb here and say I doubt if I get bit I'm going to then chance the snake to kill it and hold it while I'm driving to the ER. I'm going to be screaming like Pawl.

I'd be willing to bet GeauxJudge could describe the technique in detail now.

sure did...I have one of those and plan to hang on to it just because it is cool.

ETA: actually, antivenins were not invented until the early 1900's and not commercially available until after that. in those days, most people didn't have cars and hospitals were a hell of a long ways away so they had to do something when people were bitten....so they used the cut/suction practice to keep people alive.

The anti venom is crazy expensive. I know a guy that got bit by a copperhead that was in his work boot. He didn't have insurance and rang up a $95000 hospital bill.

This is what "common sense" can lead to, bad medicine.

I understand. But sometimes you have to ante up and kick in and confront your nemesis. He has already injected whatever venom he had into you. The second bite is meaningless and only him showing off and taunting you. I mean yeah, them fangs are gonna hurt but you have to walk through the wall of pain into the eye of the storm to survive. Be a winner. Be a leader. Do what it takes. Suck it up and Hammerdown.
