I know that feeling well. By no means was I trying to imply that former, and current, military personnel were numb to killing and to the after effects...I have had many sleepless nights, and probably will continue to. The training we received was enough for us to be able to DO our jobs...not deal with what came after.

I understand what you're saying and you're right. While I was in the moment of the fighting I didn't really think about what I was doing. I just engaged the targets my tank commander ordered me to engage. They were just targets. It was almost like being back in Germany running Tank Tables 11 & 12. It was once the fighting was over and we had time to reflect and see the swath of destruction we'd left that the thought of those I'd killed even entered my mind.

No thank God but I once had to hold a room of 5 people at gunpoint and holy frick that was the most intense 2-3 minutes of my life.

In the situation where it's me or them yes I will defend myself
In the situation that my families life is in danger due to a break in or a gun pointed at them I will shoot and not even think about it.

That's the only situations that are moral and suitable.

To quote Chris Kyle (RIP):

"When I go to face G-d there is going to be a lot of things I will have to account for but killing any of those people is not one of them."

Thanks and much respect back to you. I just hate that the politicians made it to where your generation had to follow mine in having to fight in that shite hole called the middle east.

Probably "gawd" - but I prefer not to type it out - I'm old fashioned.

You and other servicemen are the type of MEN that seperates you from other men like myself. keep fighting the good fight and know that there are strangers who keep you in their prayers!

word.

I thought it was more like you were a non-believer who couldn't even bring yourself to type out the word. I was about to make fun of you.

I appreceate that.

And to whoever I offended in this thread, all I can say is I'm sorry for whatever it is I did to offend you.

That was over 24 years ago and to this day I still often think of how many I killed and it bothers me sometimes. In the last couple years as my own son is reaching his teen years the thought of some Iraqi father who's son who died out there in the middle of the desert by my hand weighs on my mind.
I feel for you but in a combat situation it's engage the target or be killed so let it go. I realize that's easier said than done but just letting you know outsiders perspective in hopes it may help you to "forgive" yourself from something that was certainly no fault, muchless a fault of your own.
