Dude, I'm going to be on your side in probably 80%+ of arguments, but you can't reasonably believe that a ban on Islam will hold up in court because of an association with slavery.

No doubt. It's just this particular era seems to come up a lot lately. The amount of work being done on the era has increased tenfold, which helps too.
If I would have known it was going to be popular I would pursued a Ph.D. in it, like I was planning on when I was 20-ish. The problem with getting the Ph.D. was that you needed an obscene number of languages. I talked to some people at Berkeley, and they told me in order to complete their program in Near East studies I needed French, German, Latin, Arabic and possibly Greek and Persian. Their program in Far East studies (with an emphasis on Buddhism) required knowledge of 7 languages. I might still go back and try to get one in a program a little less intensive.

Don't know if it's been posted (didn't read entire thread), but Queen Noor of Jordan (King Hussein's wife), who was born, raised, & educated in the U.S., converted to Islam when she married King Hussein. That's the only one I know of.
Eta -- her dad was of Syrian descent & her mom of Swedish descent, but both were born in the U.S. I was under the impression that Queen Noor (born Lisa Najeeb Halaby) was raised in the religion of Islam, but evidently not since she converted when she married the King of Jordan.

I personally know a white Muslim. He married a Indonesian girl in med school and converted. He didn't "fake convert" either, he fasts during Ramadan, is planning to do the hajj next year, etc. His wife is nice too, now a resident at a major hospital.
