My roommate in college picked up an almost brand new TV off the side of the road one day. He actually knocked on the door and asked if it worked. Apparently the owner tossed it because it had a very small crack on the left side(you could barely see it). Was an awesome tv at the time too think it was 52 inches or something. fricking incredible someone would toss that out. Had to cost at least 2k at the time.

Every time I see people picking thru used furniture, I remember the red chair from Big Bang Theory.

My first couch was being thrown out. They carried it to the dumpster and set it down, and ten seconds later were helping me put it in my apartment.

Bought a couch cover on clearance at target and was good to go.... lasted for years until a rather overzealous frick session.

Picked up an old Singer sewing machine( kind with foot pedal). Cleaned it up, painted it glossy black. Bought piece of beveled glass that fit on top. Looks great.

Yep. Picked up an antique chair, re-upholstered it and gave it as gift to granddaughter and her fiancée. Have a really nice Mission style desk too from the side of the road.

OP must not live in Southdowns (BR). Monday afternoon/evening -- the day before roadside pickup -- is known as "Southdowns Shopping Center". Chairs, tables, TV's, loose lumber all picked over to be re-purposed... and then there are multiple guys running around in pickups, grabbing anything metal to haul to recycling. All performed in a proper and genteel manner, don't ya know.

A lot people do that in hopes they can repair it with little cost and turn it over at a garage sale or flea market.

Look at it this way, you pick up an old table that's a bit beat up, some sandpaper, a couple coats of finish or paint and sell it for $20 at a sale. To some folks that's a way to make a little extra cash.

In my area, you put out an old appliance and the scrap dealers will be by within an hour and take it away in their pickup trucks. I've tossed out stoves, refrigerators, dishwashers, etc. and they are always gone before the day is done.

You can always drive it to the dump and drop it off for free. It's inconvenient, but you also won't have a nasty mattress in front of your house that all your neighbors can see.

My mom was an antique dealer and found multiple things put out for the trash that took just a bit of rehab to resell them for hundreds.

My wife is the dumpster diving queen. She loves picking up old furniture and refinishing it. If I wake up on Sunday morning and my truck is gone she's in it

I lived in Pensacola several years ago. I lived in an area near downtown, called EastHill. I put a dresser outside on the curb next to the trash can. I didn’t need or want the dresser anymore, it wasn’t broken but was used. I expected it to be taken off the curb but it sat there for almost 2 days untouched. My neighbor then advised me to slap a sheet of paper on it and put it for sale. I proceeded to write “$25 obo” on a white sheet of paper and taped it to it. I then cracked open a beer, started my charcoal grill and before the coal turned grey the dresser was “stolen”.
I simply assigned value to it and some POS thought he was getting one over on me.
