Why would anyone choose this profession?
They probably don't have many other options. Or they just like to feel powerful. Some probably even do it for altruistic motives.

Just pointing out that it is ludicrous for the poor police to bemoan technology advancements that have resulted in slightly more scrutiny of their actions. Not that it's resulted in change or criminal charges for those caught egregiously breaking the law...

What percentage of cops do you think do what you're describing?
I've encountered ~75 cops, 3 were absolutely unfit for duty/society. So 4% is my conclusion.

... or they have previous experience of being mistreated by law enforcement. I'm not saying all cops are bad but I don't feel bad for them. They are being held accountable now. If they do their jobs right they have nothing to worry about.

What point was proven? That people don't have respect for law enforcement? They did that to themselves, and I'm not talking about any of the black lives matter crap.

1971 251 killed, 143 by gunshots
2015 128 killed, 39 by gunshots
With way more cops, far fewer deaths.

What's your point exactly? That people think cops are dishonest, intellectually deficient louts because that has been proven to be the culture of this proffession time and again?
"Boo hoo, people don't trust us because now they're better able to scrutinize our actions and we refuse to adjust our corruption for this increased exposure. Why won't they just blindly side with us regardless of the facts anymore???"

Personally, I think the problem that a lot of normal people have with the police is that they unnecessarily escalate situations that result in excessive force, and have completely eliminated the due process and "let's all be reasonable" type of attitude. It's tactical holsters, tasers, and battle helmets, and IMHO it's uncalled for.
I'm not saying that it's not warranted in some cases. But the second you don't comply with whatever they tell you to do, exactly as they say to do it, you're eating dirt with electrified prongs sticking out your back. If you're lucky.
Let me just point out that this hasn't happened to me. If/when the cops talk to me, which is basically never, it's "Yes sir, no sir, thank you".

I have dealt with a lot of cops through the years. Most of them are assholes on the job, and it's always unwarranted in my case. Some are sane and good dudes who adjust to every situation. The outcome is usually the same, so why wouldn't they just be cordial in the process?

Never before in our history has law enforcement had the directive to aggressively involve themselves in so many people's lives on a daily basis in order to keep the Law and Order leviathan sated.
Never before have so many non-invasive, benign behaviors of citizens been deemed worthy of harassment, violence, imprisonment, extortion and/or summary execution at the hands of law enforcement, with the rubber stamp of the Judicial branch as a means of sustaining itself.

Benefits/the urge to feel powerful over people/relatively low entry barriers/job security/the desire to help people/getting to legally drive over 100MPH all seem like valid reasons.

There might have been more corruption/exploitation back in the day, but there has definitely been a shift where people went from overall trust of LE to fear/suspicion. It probably has to do with the militarized nature some departments mimic coupled with the flood of negative stories we're exposed to.
I'm a good example: I don't feel "safer" when cops are around - yet they have never personally given me a reason to fear them. So it's an irrational fear/distrust probably due to constantly being bombarded by the flow of negative information.

A common phrase from the past was "police can do whatever they want." I'm glad that's not considered to be the case anymore.
