I was a nightclub DJ at the time, some of these guys would come in and drink after shows. Kinnison was dating one of the cage dancers. We played shitty slow, pop ballads late to get people to calm down and leave Hicks would talk shite about the music I would talk shite about Hicks and Sam.

Then we would all go and eat breakfast with the whores and talk shite. They thought I should try stand up, helped with an act, gave me a few jokes . They woudl heckle me but would also tell me before hand what to say back to them

I did it off and on for a few months, but had too many other things to do to try and commit.
Hicks and I stayed in contact right up until he died
Cant say we were close but when he was in Austin he would call the Capitol switchboard and find me and catch up mostly he would curse at me

Kinnison

had a very weird coincidental meeting with him, the day before he got killed, I was in SHV for some personal business, headed back to work, he had done a show a show at Cowboy's in Bossier the night before, he was walking his little dog outside of the terminal when I showed up, we began to bs, and even though it was only a 30 minute flight to DFW, I was able to get him upgraded to first, a very funny, and smart dude, he was killed the next day(or within something like 36 hours)

A girl I grew up with down the street did it for a career. She was smart as hell, great athlete and her parents about died when she decided this is what she wanted. She did it for years , traveling, living out of a suitcase, motel and old car and eventually committed suicide.

I think a lot of them use comedy to mask over personal demons,or their real life

was an angry tortured soul when I knew him.
I understand that he had found some peace with his demons shortly before he died..

I dont think he liked me much when we know one another
funny thing was we had so much in common, with my dad being a preacher and all

I'll get up and speak in front of any sized crowd (and have done it in front of 1000+)

I'll karaoke (and have) in front of hundreds of people

I consider myself funny, but I could not in anyway attempt stand up comedy

Those guys have balls

As I get older I've learned to appreciate Bill Hicks.

the first time I heard him do the "Sam, you've taken the Lord's name in vain, you've blasphemed, aren't you afraid of going to hell?" "No because I've been MARRIED!! AAAAAAHHHHH AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!" I just about lost it

The thing that sucks about stand up comedy is that the ideal crowd is one that is already receptive to you from the start and is expecting you to make them laugh. Unfortunately you don't get crowds like that until you've made a name for yourself

i liked Bill

had a soft side, was blunt and harsh but it wasnt mean
if he thought he hurt someone he would apologize every time he would see them

seemed that way at the time, and very loyal to friends

There was an open Mic night at Northgate a few years ago. Drunk me heckled the comedian. He said I should try it.

I brought the house down.

A guy I went to high school with I think moved to LA or NY to pursue it as a career. I've never seen his "routine", but he posts a ton of facebook status "jokes" and if they are any indication, he's just not funny at all...at least not funny enough to try to be a professional comedian. He always seemed to try waaay too hard in high school to be funny. Just didn't seem like it came natural to him, it was always too forced.

He was a nice guy, don't have anything against him. And I respect the balls it takes to do stand-up and the thick skin he must have because I'm sure he's gotten more than his fair share of crickets. But I just don't understand how some people can be so convinced they are cut out to do that stuff...being funny amongst your group of friends isn't in the same stratosphere as making 100s of strangers laugh on stage

For real, Owl actually used to do stand-up in the Houston area.
