I just bought 20ish acres and I want to put a rather big shop/house on it.

I've asked this question before but I can't find the thread.

My only stips are that I want metal exterior and I would prefer red iron construction, though wood may sway me on cost. Leaning toward 50x70. Want 18-20ft height so I can do two levels in the living side.

While I want lots of space, the idea is to minimize cost by having a few large rooms as opposed to a bunch of small ones.

Does anyone have any experience with contractors in the baton rouge or surrounding area? I would like to start building by august.

My parents have built one and are in the process of building another.

They love it.

I've heard them called "barndominiums". Pretty sweet. The one I've seen was 2 floors, but the whole bottom floor was a garage. Parked 2 vehicles, jeep, tractor and riding lawnmower under the house. Looked very similar to this...

Dirt work, concrete, and getting utilities set will be most expensive part of construction. I designed one a couple of weeks ago as I want to do the same.

Do you have plans yet? Permanent living for you or a retreat of sorts?

Once the initial cost for the spray foam has been added in, you might be surprised.

I have only what I have drawn out. I've staked out the size with string to check fitment for parking and what not.

Permanent living.

Seems like you will be limiting your value for future sales. Why not just build an open concept farm house? This is your investment.

In my family, we do not sell property.

This is meant for me to have a place to start a family. Lots of space, crime free area, low maintenance costs, safe, tons of room.

I didn't know this was a subset in housing. Seems to be big in Texas. Carry on. Learn something new everyday.

The whole idea behind them are massive rooms with minimal cost. We entertain a lot, it would be nice to have a big living room kitchen that could be opened into an even bigger garage if the need arose.

Everyone whom I have talked to with one has loved it. I just don't know of a local contractor who is willing.

For what it's worth (nothing, and you'll like it), I love the idea if it's going to be a permanent home. Who gives a shite about curb appeal if you're never selling? Put the money into making the interior (you know, the part where you live) as luxurious and comfortable as possible.

Ok, I see no spray foam insulation in AUCE05's pic, so how in the world would you keep that thing cool in the summer and warm in the winter?

Looks really cool but is it practical?
