If that thief has a weapon or you fear for your life, then yes you can DEFEND yourself. Just for shoplifting? I'm gonna go with no.

I hate thieves. But you can't shoot someone for stealing a snickers. But I know the ot hates due process.

If you get into a fight while stopping a shoplifter, it becomes robbery, not petty theft.
