Wear a mask everywhere you go, whether inside or outside. Air pollution is everywhere.
I'm so glad I grew up when America didn't infringe on so many of people's rights. You can't even use a lightbulb of your choice anymore.

Don't forget to always wear long sleeves and pants along with that mask. UV rays and stuff.
Oh yeah, hamburgers should be banned to. Bad for you. Don't even want to discuss cheeseburgers. Total joke eating one is not a felony.

Apparently, there have been several contract revisions over the years. Some were concessions made by the state when Harrah's filed for bankruptcy, others, I'm not sure. Harrah's has been lobbying to reduce the workforce minimum for years. The smoking ban just gives them a little extra leverage this year.

...and earplugs
What really gets me is that bands and bars can play music over 15 dB. Noise pollution is for real and I'm outraged. Any private establishment should be required to cater to the masses.

Go back to being banned eh
Posted on 5/5/15 at 6:32 pm to Sparkplug#1
No doubt. Live college football games in loud stadiums should be banned as well in light of the potential problems loud noises can cause.

When are we gonna legalize sports betting? That's the real question here

I've never been banned, except from stupid laws in New Orleans.

TankYank13:
The quote below is from a 15MAR2015 Nola.com article. The casino provides a substantial amount of money to the city in lease payments ($13.6 million), but the bulk of the tax money goes to the state. N.O. gets the first $1.8 million in tax collections, the state gets the next $60 million. Who do you think benefits most?
"Harrah's rehashed its argument that banning smoking on its gambling floor would run off a large number of its customers, reduce its revenue and cut yearly sales tax collections by $500,000. It also claimed the law could jeopardize the $3.6 million in gambling money the state sends to the city to cover some public safety and sanitation costs and another $13.6 million in annual lease payments the casino pays to New Orleans.
"But not one time do they mention the employees," Cantrell responded. "Here again, they don't mention the employees, and they don't mention the billions of dollars being spent on health care needs.
"They are the third largest employer in our city and yet they're saying these lives don't matter."
Under state law, the first $1.8 million in payments the casino sends the state must be rerouted to New Orleans to pay for clean up and cops associated with managing the casino at the foot of Canal Street. The next $60 million goes to a state education fund. The city then stands to receive the next $1.8 million out of any additional gambling revenue sent to the state in any given year.

I think they should let Harrahs build a smoking section and staff it with dealers and workers who smoke. NO complaints. Vent it really well and there should be no issue.

Decent idea IMO.

They have that second floor over masquerades, make that smoking section. I have a feeling smoking isn't the reason for the layoffs. I live next door to the GM and believe they were trying to cut back employees for awhile. This is just an excuse to do it and blame it on the city.

Yep. The thread on the Poliboard had a link that blamed March revenues. The smoking ban went into effect in late April.
Also, from the link in this OP.

Reductions would be handled by attrition, he said. The business already has an annual turnover of about 600 employees a year. Many of those jobs just won’t be filled.

The reduction in force has been proposed several times over the past (approx.) ten years. This isn't a new request, strictly in response to the smoking ban. However, the thought is that the smoking ban gives Harrah's a little additional leverage this year.
Harrah's already lobbied the City to allow a seperate "smoking allowed" gaming area. Latoya Cantrell wasn't having any part of that. She's all about public health...

Lol, she should move to another State or city then. NOLA isn't known for being heathy.

Thank you for letting me know, but no offense taken.

I don't know what her angle is, but I'd bet dollars to donuts that it isn't public health. I'm sure she enjoys the publicity, but there may be more to it than that.
